Submarine History. By Jasper, Bennett, and Tye. 1623. Cornelius Drebbel invented the first submarine. It was a 12 man wooden boat with a top and the 12 oarsman would row downward to propel it into the water. 1729. Nathanial Symons created a one man sinking and rising boat.

  1. Submarine History By Jasper, Bennett, and Tye

  2. 1623 • Cornelius Drebbelinvented the first submarine. • It was a 12 man wooden boat with a top and the 12 oarsman would row downward to propel it into the water.

  3. 1729 • Nathanial Symons created a one man sinking and rising boat. • He sealed himself up in it and stayed underwater for 45 minutes.

  4. 1776 • David Bushnell built the first submarine to launch a attack on a warship. • The attack was unsuccessful because the small drill didn’t penetrate the hull of the warship.

  5. 1800 • Robert Fulton created the first torpedo and launched it off a submarine to destroy a warship.

  6. 1812 • A engineer wrote a description of the submarine. • Torpedo Boat- a new invented torpedo boat resembling a turtle floating just above the water

  7. 1850 • Wilhelm Bauer built a submarine called the brandtautcher also known as incendiary diver • The boat was made of iron and was the size of a small sperm whale it was armed with 3 torpedoes

  8. 1861 • Villeroi created a majorly destructive bomb to be used against enemy warships • The weapon was a hand-held bomb the you can plant against the enemy warships hull by a diver.

  9. 1862 • A confederate army officer Francis D. Lee created the steamboat known as David. • The David used a sharp drill with explosives at the end to shoot or ram the enemy warship. • The point would pierce the armored plating of the ship then lay the bombs in and at the push of a button they would explode.

  10. 1864-the first war • In 1864 the submarine was used in battle. • There were 2 types of subs used the David and another type that shot 10 torpedoes attacked the enemy warship USS Housatonic. • The warship was helpless and the submarine became a important weapon
