Activity #1 • Double Cough • deep breath; cough, cough • Controlled Cough • deep breath; exhale..deep breath; exhale..deep breath; cough • Series of 3 Coughs • deep breath; cough..deep breath; cough..deep breath; cough • Huffing • deep breath; HUH, HUH, HUH • Positions: Sitting, leaning forward or a modified position as discussed

  8. Activity #2 (manual-assisted) • Costophrenic Assist (supine or hooklying) • “Take a deep breath, hold the breath for a few seconds, then cough” • Heimlich Assist (supine or sidelying) • “Take a deep breath, hold it, then cough” • Bilateral UE D2 PNF Pattern Assist (supine, reclined, or sitting) • “Inhale and lift your arms up and out; hold; exhale and bring your arms down and in; cough”

  9. Activity #3 (self-assisted) • Short-Sitting (seated in WC or EOB) • Overhead and diagonal pattern • Long-Sitting (arms in “butterfly” position) • Can be done in short sitting too if pts are stable enough in low back chair or stool • Note: These are also thoracic mobility exercises, without the cough
