  3. Honors College Rome Center COST(assuming 20 participants) ± $16,700 Includes: • Ball State tuition for 12 credits (approx $3024) • Round trip airfare(approx $1200) • Housing (approx $6100) • Insurance (approx $175) • the Permesso di Sioggiorno (a study visa which allows you to remain in Italy beyond 90 days) ~ approx $120 • Living expenseallowance ($2900) • Arrival transportationfrom Da Vinci Airport to the AUR campus • AUR campus orientationand other student services on the AUR campus (including all student activities on the same basis as regular AUR students) • and program overhead.

  4. Honors College Rome Center Housing • in local apartments by AUR • apartments are located in areas of Rome convenient to the university campus: Monteverde, Giancolense, Trastevere and ColliPortuense. All housing is either within walking distance or conveniently located to public transit routes relative to AUR. • desk-top computer and free internet access • internet access is also available on the AUR campus. • refrigerator and cooking facilities • washer facilities, not dryers • apartments are 1, 2, or 3 bedroom units • would house 2, 4, or 6 students, respectively.

  5. Honors College Rome Center • Courses • ITL 100 Introduction to Italian Language and Culture • This AUR course fulfills the BSU requirement for Centers that all students must take a relevant “Life and Culture” class. The course includes basic, survival Italian and highlights of contemporary Italian culture • Two courses taught by the BSU Program Director, Dr. Christine Shea • These courses are intended to meet one or more Honors requirements • One course will be The City of Rome, which can be taken to fulfill one of several possible Honors requirements (or as a CC course) • One or (preferably) two additional courses taught by AUR faculty • That is, ITL 100 and one or two additional AUR courses • Further discussion on the number of courses, credits, and cost will follow • 12 or 15 credits

  6. Honors College Rome Center • Financial Aid • Ball State financial aid applies to the Rome Center program • A full tuition scholarship will reduce the tuition cost by 100%: you should without fail take the full 15 credits. • A “full ride” scholarship will also provide a partial reimbursement for housing. • You may also apply for a Rinker/Yuhas Scholarship through the Rinker Center for International Programs (102 Student Center). • Application for the Rinker/Yuhas is time sensitive. • This includes any tuition-based merit scholarship you may already have • A Presidential Scholarship will reduce the tuition cost given above by 50%. • This means that if you take 3 credits beyond the budgeted 12 credits, you will actually pay only half of the (approximately) $250 per credit, or $750/2 = $375; if you have the Presidential *and* take the additional 3 credits from AUR, the Rome Center program will also reimburse you for $150: your net cost would be $375 - $150 = $225 (less than the cost of one credit).

  7. Honors College Rome Center • How to Apply • Honors College students should meet with Dr. James Ruebel in the Honors College (BA 104, 285-1024), or with Dr. Christine Shea (Program Director, Modern Languages & Classics, 285-2445, cshea@bsu.edu, 765 631-0652) to begin the application process. • Students not in the Honors College may be added to a waiting list: you should contact Dr. Shea, as above. To be eligible, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.3. A decision on your enrollment will be made in a timely way, before you must enroll for Fall classes. • Once you have decided to enroll, you should bring a “Permission to Enroll” form to the Honors College with a check for $500 made payable to “Ball State University” attached. Copies of this and other required forms will be forwarded to the Rinker Center for International Programs. • This $500 is non-refundable and serves as your deposit for the program (it will be deducted from the overall program fee). • You will be added to the Blackboard site for the Rome Center, where you will find all necessary forms and substantial resources and information for the program.

  8. Honors College Rome Center • Your Questions? • You may contact the Honors College at any time by phone or email: 285-1024, honors@bsu.edu. If you send an email, put “Rome Center” in the subject line to speed up the process. To finalize your courses and your options for meeting Honors requirements, make an appointment with Associate Dean John Emert by calling the same number. • You may also contact the Program Director, Dr. Christine Shea, directly. she can be reached at 285-2445 (office) or 765 631-0652 (cell) or by emailing cshea@bsu.edu. If you are not in the Honors College, contact Dr. Shea to be added to the waiting list. A decision about your enrollment will be made in plenty of time for you to plan your Fall schedule.
