  2. Vertical Gym (174-175) • Gained our interest because it dealt with sports and helped limit crime • Safe open space that promotes community through sports competition • Limit pricing by building ramps instead of elevators and using recycled materials

  3. Vertical Gym cont. • Environmental impact wind towers, solar panels, and rainwater collection • Creativity Created a new style of building with limited costs & harmful environmental impacts that also promoted sports related activities & a sense of community

Incremental Housing (118-119) • Offered community style housing and provided less fortunate with places to live • Allows for expansion and improvements that are specific to the individual • Allows for the value of houses to increase over time rather than depreciate • Creativity architects took housing construction and created a new simplified version of it which benefited people in this area

  7. Interview #1 What the community is missing: • Sense of community What he would like to see: • Build a public park down the street • Lives in The Gallery • Rarely interacts with other tenants in his building due to layout

  8. Interview #2 • Resident of Winston-Salem his entire life • Lives on 13th street • Has seen changes in Goler district over time What the community is missing: • Less expensive places to eat What he would like to see: • Better use of the unused space in the Goler district

  9. Interview #3 What the community is missing: • Not sure because she is doesn’t spend any time here What he would like to see: • Revitalize the abandoned buildings • Customer at Garage Door Services of Winston-Salem • Rarely comes to the Goler district

Interview #4 • Janitor and member at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church • Church is one of the few places in the Goler district where people congregate and foster community What the community is missing: • More locations where people can come together What he would like to see: • Community center where the church can host events

  12. What we learned from the interviews… • Desire to utilize available land • Would like more community gathering locations

  13. Our creative process… • Interviews confirmed our initial ideas • Revitalize land for residential living or community gathering • Identified potential locations to develop

  14. Our Project Proposal • New housing developments that foster a community spirit • Diverse array of housing options to attract many socio-economic levels

  15. Our Project Proposal • Currently a problem with abandoned lots, warehouses, and factories • Introduce greenery, trees, community gardens, and parks in place of these deserted lots • Revitalization may bring a few small businesses and shops into the area over time

  16. Our Project Proposal • Winston-Salem Transport Authority should provide the citizens of Winston-Salem with a bus route into the Golerdistrict • Final steps include constructing community buildings, such as centrally located recreation centers
