  4. What is SOCIAL MEDIA? • Sharing of news, video, audio, photos with people in your network • Usually people you know or people who want to know you • You become more “discoverable” as others share

  5. WHY SOCIAL MEDIA? • Promotion – be positive • Engagement – get public involved • Branding – stay out front • Staffing – find the best hires • Retention – keep your readers

  6. Professional Social Media • This is the future of journalism, so get to know it! • Keep your personal and professional blogs separate. • It’s easier to violate the ethics codes and even the law on social media. Your credibility can be destroyed in an instant. • Don’t let comments start an argument. • NEVER argue via comments. • You can decide whether to allow comments, but in the end it’s all about engagement!

  13. Now a two way street Engaging viewers and readers

  14. CNN JournalistED Payne • Being a journalist at CNN isn't always without confrontation, but sometimes things work out.I got a personal message on Facebook from a reader last night who was less than happy with our coverage and a story I had written -- the one about the Australian baseball player who was gunned down in Oklahoma by the three teenagers.Notice the change in tone as we exchanged messages. I removed the reader's name and cleverly replaced it with "Reader."

  15. Engaging viewers • Reader:How about you be honest for a change and mention the race of those "TEENS" that killed that WHITE teen. It's guilty white pussies like you that go running scared when it's black on white. But oh boy, white on black and lets get everyone upset and sell some advertising. No matter what you do for the rest of your life, you will always be a scared little boy and a hypocrite. F*ck you and CNN.CNN Ed Payne:(Reader), thanks for checking in. The website clearly shows the races of the those involved. Nothing is being done to hide that. If race becomes an issue in the story, we will report that. Up to this point, no one has suggested it had anything to do with race. Law enforcement says the teens charged said they were just looking for someone to kill, not looking for a white guy.

  16. Engaging viewers • Reader:so zimmmerman went searching for a black kid?iappreciate the response but the reporting is dishonestCNN Ed Payne:I'm certainly not saying that Zimmerman went looking for a black kid. If you remember, the Zimmerman case went largely unreported outside of Florida for a number of weeks. It became a story and gained traction when the race angle came into the story and the demonstrations began.· Reader:i hear ya. thanks for the reply. you have at least got me to watch again. thanks again ed. have a great night.
