  2. Note: Holocaust means ‘sacrifice’, Jewish people prefer the term ‘churban’ meaning ‘destruction’ Why was the ‘Holocaust’ allowed to happen?  Aims To find out why the treatment of Jews got worse during WWII To assess who might have been to blame

  3. Why was the problem of the Jews more pressing for the Nazis in 1942? Wannsee, Berlin, 1942

  4. Steps to Final Solution • 1942, Nazi leaders met at Wannsee, Berlin • Planned quickest way to eliminate the remaining 11 million Jews • Concentration camps would become extermination camps • 6 major camps, including Auschwitz

  6. Previous tactics • Boycotts, purges, labour camps • Nuremberg Laws • Kristallnacht • Einsatzgruppen (‘one sentence groups’) • Ghetto • Mobile gas chambers • Death camps

  7. Process • Jews rounded up into ghettos • Transported in cattle trains to camps • Separated into two camps: 15+ healthy sent to left, old, sick and women with children sent to right

  8.  Your task • Read source 3 in your textbook on p.157 and learn what happened next to Jewish prisoners at Belzec death camp.

  9. Who knew? • 1942, British & American governments received reports of concentration camps • 150 German companies used Auschwitz prisoners • 1000s of ordinary Germans helped with the process

  10.  Your task • Who was most to blame? Your teacher will give you a list of people who helped in the process of the Final Solution. Arrange the list in order of responsibility.

  11.  Your task • Watch the film clip. It contains difficult images of the suffering endured by Jewish prisoners. You may prefer simply to listen to the commentary. What does it tell us about the reaction of Germans and Allied troops to the news of what had happened in the death camps?
