  2. apparition • Illusion; specter • Incongruous means inappropriate. • Apparition is a noun and is something that should not be there – it doesn’t make sense where and/or when it appears.

  3. baleful • Foreboding; sinister • Malign means to speak evil of. • Baleful is an adjective and describes a serious threat.

  4. capitulate • Succumb; yield • Capitulate is a verb, so it is giving up/in when you would normally not do so or have no choice but to do so.

  5. initiate • Launch; trigger • Initiate is a verb that indicates the start of something.

  6. insolent • Pompous; smug • Insolent is an adjective and is used to describe someone who is full of him or herself and believes it is his or her right to be rude and disrespectful.

  7. pliant • Flexible; versatile • Plaint is an adjective that describes someone or something that can adapt to changes without much fuss.

  8. poseur • Hypocrite; pretender • A poseur is a noun and is a person who is trying to impress others by NOT behaving as he or she typically would.
