  4. Focus Question What factors influenced the change of Saint Adelaide to give up her life as a princess in order to help the poor?

  5. Deep Question Evaluate and Explain why Saint Adelaide devoted herself to helping the poor?

  6. Saint Adelaide was born in 931, born a princess she was the daughter of King Rudolph of Burgundy. At the age of two she was promised an arranged marriage to Lothair, child of King Hugh of Italy.

  7. Hugh married Adelaide’s widowed mother. At the age of sixteen she married Lothair, they had a daughter together named Emma. It was not a happy marriage but a very short marriage as Lothair passed away in 950.

  8. Lothair’s successor put her in prison when Adelaide refused to marry his son. After four months in prison she escaped in August 951. In the same year the German emperor Otto came to Italy and proposed marriage, she accepted. They had four children together, two who became nuns.

  9. Ludolf Otto's son from his first marriage, was crushed by the marriage of his father and Adelaide.

  10. With saint Adelaide influence within the church she encouraged that Otto got involved, they did have a close relationship with the church.

  11. After staying with Otto in Italy, she received a crown from john Xll.

  12. Her husband was successful in 973 by their son Otto ll, Adelaide for some years erased a powerful influence.

  13. Later her daughter in law turned Otto against his mother, in 983 Otto agreed her his authority in Italy.

  14. Otto died the same year the new emperor stepped up Otto lll, still a minor. She had become the child emperor.

  15. By this time Saint Adelaide was dedicated and was free to devote her life and work to the catholic churches.

  16. She contributed to the foundations and restorations of religion houses.

  17. On her way to Burgundy to support her nephew Rudolf lll against rebellion, she died in a monastery she had founded in Seltz.

  18. She had constantly devoted herself to the service for the church and peace and to the empire as guardian of both she also interested herself in the change of slaves.

  19. Fertile Question The life of a saint challenged the way we live out our lives because we should worry about others as well as ourselves. Take care and look after others, helping the needy out as well as focusing on our own wellbeing.

  20. Focus Question There were many factors that influenced Saint Adelaide to give up her life as a princess and help the less fortunate. Saint Adelaide had a very strong relationship with the catholic church. Throughout her life she helped out the poor built ministries and churches for the less fortunate.
