  1. Common Core Implementation Plan Whittier City School District Board of Education Meeting April 7, 2014

WCSD Common Core Vision The Whittier City School District will assume full implementation of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, Mathematics, English Language Development, and Literacy in History Social Science and Science. WCSD will facilitate ongoing learning opportunities for teachers to engage them in developing research based instructional practices to ensure continuous student growth. Schools will foster collaboration by providing supportive structures and settings to enrich Professional Learning Communities focused on teaching and learning. To prepare students for a 21st Century job market, classroom experiences will be designed to encourage student creativity, increase meaningful discourse and communication, develop critical thinking skills, while providing opportunities for problem solving and collaboration, engaging students by means of technological resources and high quality materials.

WCSD Goals • Ensure teachers’ understanding of the Common Core Standards and Instructional Shifts • Provide support for lesson design and methodology, as well as planning and resources for the effective implementation of the CCSS • Provide training on the integration of technology and the development of 21st Century skills into classroom instruction • Promote teacher collaboration and provide protocols for enhancing professional learning teams • Develop parent understanding of the Common Core so that they may support their children at home

  4. 2013 – 2014 Professional Development • One week 2013 Summer Institute on Common Core • One week 2013 Summer Institute CCSS Writing • (5) Modules for all Kindergarten – 5th Grade Teachers on the Common Core Reading Standards • (5) Modules for all 6th – 8th Grade ELA Teachers on the Common Core Reading Standards • (5) Modules for all 6th – 8th Grade Math Teachers on the Common Core Math Standards • (2) Modules for all 6th – 8th grade Science and Social Studies Teachers on the Common Core Standards

  5. 2013 – 2014 Professional Development (continued) • (4) After school Trainings on the Comprehension Toolkit • (3) Common Core Lead Teacher Training dates • (4) Days in the Summer and 3 follow up days for iPad Pilot Teachers • Coaching Sessions with Program Specialist on IEP Goals aligned to the Common Core • CPM Professional Development • Site based Professional Development

  6. 2014 – 2015 Professional Development • Four Day 2014 Summer Institute on Common Core Writing • Four Day 2014 Summer Institute CCSS Balanced Literacy • (4) Modules for all Kindergarten – 5th Grade Teachers on the Common Core Mathematics Standards • (1) Full day module for all Kindergarten – 5th Grade Teachers on the new ELD Standards • (5) Modules for all 6th – 8th Grade Math Teachers and ELA Teachers with a focus on Writing • (3) Modules for all 6th – 8th grade Science and Social Studies Teachers on the Common Core Standards • Additional purchases to support ELA instruction and middle school math

  7. 2014 – 2015 Professional Development (continued) • (4) Half Days of Summer PD on the Common Core for Special Education Teachers • Coaching Sessions with Program Specialist on IEP Goals aligned to the Common Core • (4) Days in the Summer and 3 follow up days for iPad Pilot Teachers • Lesson Study with interested Grade Level Teams • Possible grant with Silicon Valley Mathematics Institute (SVMI) to provide additional support for PD in CCSS Mathematics, Assessment and Lesson Study

Other Support for CCSS • SBAC aligned Assessment for 3-8 ELA and 6-8 Math • Initial revisions to K-2 Assessments • Report Card revisions K-5 • Upcoming purchase of intervention materials • Committees to examine materials aligned to Common Core • Some purchases to support ELA instruction; some purchases of CPM for middle school math • Expansion of materials purchase in Summer and Fall

Parent Information Meetings • All sites have provided at least 2 Common Core parent presentations • Middle Schools provided additional CCSS Parent Meetings on Math Pathway • SSC, ELAC, DELAC and DAC Parent Meetings • Site level and District PTA/PFO Meetings • Saturday Common Core Parent Academy (Fall 2014) • Other site level meetings

Teacher Feedback: Collaboration • Time for Collaboration • Minimum Day • Summer (paid) • During the School Day (sub release) • Time and support for instructional planning, analyzing student work, correcting assessments, sharing findings and creating target goals • Support in creating structures for collaboration • Time and support for planning the literacy block and identifying common effective approaches for teaching CCSS in ELA and Math

Teacher Feedback: Materials • Ensure enough materials for all students • Ensure all Special Education teachers, including Resource Specialists, receive materials • Increase copy budget to ensure teachers have sufficient copies for new materials • Resources • Books to support close reading lessons • Wide range of books for students to access • Form committees to examine textbooks and other resources

Teacher Feedback: Pacing, Alignment and Assessment • Align assessment to standards throughout the school year • Align ELA and Math Benchmarks to instruction • Create a pacing guide or sample instructional calendar • Align genres for reading and writing (fiction/non-fiction) • Allow students’ needs to guide our goals and instructional practices
