  1. Welcome to AVID Parent/Student Night! • AVID Coordinator • Matt Bean: mbean@murrieta.k12.ca.us • 951-894-5750 Ext: 6608

  2. What is AVID? AVID is an academic, regularly scheduled elective class based on writing as a tool of learning, inquiry method, and collaborative grouping. The three main components of the program are: academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities.

  3. How will my student benefit from being in AVID? AVID Mission The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students will: • succeed in rigorous curriculum, • complete a rigorous college preparatory path, • enter mainstream activities of the school, • increase their enrollment in four-year colleges, and • become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society.

How will the AVID program contributeto the success of my student? • Teaches study and organizational skills • Strengthens student analytical ability & writing skills • Gives tutorial help through college tutors • Teaches students to work collaboratively to be successful in the most rigorous courses • Takes students to visit colleges and universities • Assists students with the application process for four year colleges and universities • Helps students explore careers through research and guest speakers • Personalized attention to assist in student growth and maturation. • Test Preparation for the SAT / ACT

What are the AVID Methodologies all students will be expected to follow? • Cornell Notes: stimulatescritical thinking skills and fosters test preparation. • Notebook Checks:Done every three weeks, monitors note taking organization and time management • Grade Checks:Monitored every three weeks • Tutorials: Fosters critical thinking skills and analysis, focuses on core subjects, done once or twice a week • Tutoring: Peer tutoring, college tutoring, grade improvement • Counseling: Personalized four year plan

AVID Classroom Activities • Researching and applying to colleges • Applying for financial aid and scholarships • Visiting College Campuses • Standardized test preparation • Parent Information Sessions (Financial Aid Nights, College 101, Grade Level Expectations) • Analytical Inquiry – Weekly Tutorials

What classes will my student be taking? • A-G requirements: • History/Social Science-2 years required • English-4 years required • Mathematics-3 required, 4 recommended • Lab Science-2 required, 3 recommended • Foreign Language-2 required, 3 recommended • Visual and Performing Arts- 1 year required • College Prep electives-1 year required

  8. AVID Statistics World-Wide • 4500 Schools • 45 States • 18 Countries • Nearly 400,000 students served in 2009-2010

  9. AVID’s Impact on College • National College Going rate to complete 4-year college entrance requirements: • National (Non-AVID): 34% • National (AVID): 89%

VMHS AVID Program • Currently: 8 Sections, 250 students, 5 AVID Elective Teachers • 2006: 1st graduating class: 23 students, 22 students accepted to 4-year college (95% acceptance rate) • 2007: 43 Students, 43 students accepted to 4-year college (100% acceptance rate) • 2008: 35 seniors, 35 students accepted to 4-year college (100% acceptance rate) • 2009: 48 seniors, 48 students accepted to 4-year college (100% acceptance rate) • 2010: 62 seniors (largest class) – Expected 100% Acceptance Rate

VMHS AVID Expectations • Individual Determination AVID is a choice not a requirement – It’s an Attitude! • Adopt the AVID Methodologies • Maintain a Competitive Grade Point Average (Tutoring/ Probation/ Dismissal) • Complete a Rigorous Course of Study (minimum 1 Advanced Placement Course before graduation) • Actively Participate on Campus (sports, clubs, band, leadership etc. )

  13. How Do I Apply? Complete Application (www.vmhs.net – on Mr. Bean’s website ) Turn in Application to Middle School Student Support Office (Due: March 24th) Take part in Interview Maintain competitive grades and positive behavior
