  1. Beginning, Middle, and end 9 May 2013 3633

  2. Do Now • Read the story • Answer the questions using complete sentences • Answer with proof

  3. Good readers Think about the beginning, middle, and ending of a story.

  4. What we’ve done so far… • Inference • Dialogue • Details

  5. What’s happening today • Beginning • Middle • End • What does that mean? • Sequencing!

  6. What is sequencing? • Getting things in the right order. • Beginning, middle, and end • order of things: the order in which things are arranged, actions are carried out, or events happen

  7. When you write a story… You have to start somewhere…… Why not the beginning? Once upon a time…. In a galaxy far, far, away…. When I woke up on Wednesday….. Here’s the big question: What’s the first thing that happens? When I woke up on Wednesday, it was raining.

  8. When you write a story… • After the beginning, all the stuff that happens next is in the middle. • There is action in the middle. • Things happen to the characters. When I woke up on Wednesday, it was raining. I thought to myself “if I were a tree, I would love this weather.” And then, like magic, I was a tree! I was a tree for a year.

  9. When you write a story… • The last thing is the ending. • An ending usually helps make all the stuff before it make sense. • An ending also gives you a conclusion to a story. When I woke up on Wednesday, it was raining. I thought to myself “if I were a tree, I would love this weather.” And then, like magic, I was a tree! I was a tree for a year. At the end of the year, a kindly old wizard changed me back into a human.

  10. How do you find the order of events? • Read the passage • THINK! What would make sense? What is the logical order? • Write the logical order out • Yes, it really is that easy! • Practice: Sequencing Smallest to Largest

  11. Let’s use a GO to help us…. • Read the passage • Use the GO to write down the order of events • Complete the GO for Baking Cookies • Stop there, we will discuss this. • Complete the GO for Inside the Game • Complete your Exit Ticket • When you are done with everything, please work on your weekly Reading Pack
