Core Values: A Biblical FoundationEphesians 4: 11-16 • 11The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. 14 We must no longer be children, tossed to and fro and blown about by every wind of doctrine, by people's trickery, by their craftiness in deceitful scheming. 15 But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love.

  6. Assumptions The work of the P/SPRC is in covenant relationship with the Staff, the Pastor, the Parish, and to the connection of the United Methodist Church (as expressed through the District Superintendent).

  7. Composition • See Paragraph 258.2 a-f in the 2008 Discipline for more information (Handout) • Five to nine professing members plus Lay Leader and Lay Delegate. One member must be a young adult. Term of service is three years, committee is classed by year with regular rotation off after term

  8. Responsibilites • See Paragraph 258.2 g for the twelve duties of the committee • The first two tasks are: • “ To encourage, strengthen, nurture, support, and respect the pastor(s) and staff and their families.” • “To promote unity in the church(es).”

  9. Responsibilities Continued • The purpose of the committee can be summarized as follows: 1. Identify and clarify values for ministry 2. Assist in assessing gifts for ministry 3. Setting priorities for leadership and service 4. Recommendations for pastoral compensation (see next slide) 5. Identify and support persons called to ministry.

  10. ResponsibilitiesContinued • Pastoral Support: • Salary • Hospitalization and Pension • Travel • Days off and Vacation • Continuing Education • Parsonage

  11. RELATIONS • Sometimes have to deal with conflict! • Don’t keep things from pastor. • Try to bring resolution and discussion. • Don’t call secret meetings. • Be appreciative!

Our UM Connection • Your local church is an expression of a larger body of believers • Though separate, we are not independent • The United Methodist Church is connectional, not congregational in structure and organization • I am a conference superintendent appointed to serve in the Three Rivers District

  13. Consultation • The Triad of Pastor, Committee, and Superintendent • Regular and Annual • A blend of completed paperwork and personal contact • Consider the Circle Process

  14. Consultation: Pastor and Committee • In your regularly scheduled meetings (4-6 times a year) spend some time in the following • Clarify shared vision • Assess gifts and needs • Set priorities • Practice accountability and confidentiality • Do staff oversight

Consultation:Superintendent and Committee • Annually review and update your church’s profile (LCPL and LCPA) • Annually complete the CFC (Continuing Formation of Clergy) and Covenant • Annual Parsonage Review • Propose compensation package for the pastor • Give consideration of the question of continued appointment

  16. Consultation:Pastor and Superintendent • Review profiles (PPA and PPL) • Review CFC and Covenant • Review Continuing Education • Personal and Professional Goals • Clear communication • Consider continued appointment

Calendar of Meeting Schedule: Jan-March - Set expectations – what is most important? - Review and set Policies April- June - Strategies to meet expectations - Housing (annual review/inspection) July – September - Fill out profiles and covenant - Review Salary and Benefits October – December - Meet in Consultation with DS - Implement Covenant and goals for new year
