  4. Feng Yang Drum • All come from Feng-Yang, a district in the Anhwei Province in the east Central region of China. • This song is one of a group known as “Flower Drum Songs.” • These songs have originated as work songs sung by the Feng Yang Farmers in the Rice Fields.

  5. Feng Yang Drum • A series of Disasters—droughts, floods, earthquakes, and locusts—drove many of the farmers from their homes. Some became vagabonds who wandered across China, singing their songs and begging in the streets. • Traditionally the Flower Drum Songs are sung by a man and a girl impersonating the refugees from Feng-yang. And as the song states, the man plays a gong, the girl plays a flower drum
