  2. The Remember Alex Brown Foundation • The RABF was founded by Johnny Mac and Jeanne Brown. • This foundation strives to end distracted driving on the road. • Their mission is to make sure that no more parents mourn the loss of their child because of a preventable accident.

  3. Application of Business Skills • We communicated directly with the foundation. • We made phone calls, sent e-mails, and sent them formal progress reports. • We used credible sources and used the BWH to correctly cite in APA format. • We expanded our use of oral and written communication and applied it in real-life scenario. • We creatively used visual media that targeted our audience in a effective manner without alienating either age group.

  4. Methodologies • Week 1- We researched; laws, informative statistics, preventative measures, and new age technologies that prevent distracted driving. • Week 2- We created two brochures, one that was specific to the foundations needs and one that was specific to our class. • Week 3- We corrected our drafts of the brochures after getting feedback from the foundation and had a meeting over the phone to make sure that everything was done to their expectations. • Week 4- We presented the PSA and over-reached our targeted goal of 200 pledges and instead pledged 500 adults and students at Copper Hills High School and at SLCC. • Week 5- Finally, we realized through this presentation how far we have come in this class. We did really well at Copper Hills High School and actually got the message across to the students. We met the needs of the foundation and became better communicators.

  5. Our Experience with the 20–40 Year Olds Going into this we did not know what to expect. We targeted two age groups; 16 -19 and 20- 40. • The 20 -40 year olds were an easy target. They paid attention to us and they were respectful. They understood their actions as distracted drivers. All we did was reinforce their belief that what they were doing was wrong. • When we showed them the PSA they saw themselves not as the ones in the accident, but as the parents and family members. This made the PSA more effective because it made them realize that they could be the ones having to say “I’m sorry. I just killed your child.”

  6. Our Experience with the 16-19 Year Olds • This group was harder to target. We needed to command their attention. They were texting when we began speaking, but all that stopped when we began with a story about a girl their age who texted and died. • We started out with Alex Brown, and made them get to know her. When the PSA started most of them were in tears because they saw themselves as the three girls. • Copper Hills High School had already lost too many of their students. We implored them to not be another students we’d have to mourn. • By the time we were finished, no one was texting and all attention was on us.

  7. How we Improved our Verbal and Written Communication Skills • Andrea: “I learned to be a more effective public speaker to persuade the audience to understand the severity of what we were trying to accomplish. I also learned how to speak with my colleagues.” • Mic: “I learned the importance of proof-reading.” • Kelsey: “I learned the importance of being a team member and communicating together to get the best work. When we didn’t communicate effectively, you could tell in our work. We had to work together.”

  8. Summary of our Experience with the Service Learning Project • We learned to work together as a team. We each pulled our weight and did not feel left out. • We had a big work load and still wished we had an extra team member to relieve the stress and the anxiety that was caused by the time constraints. • We learned that we were stronger than we thought we were and we persevered through sickness, vacations, break-ups, WORK, and life.

  9. Questions? • Comments? • Concerns? • Emotional outbursts?
