  1. Infrared Reflector Based on Cholesteric Liquid Crystals Hitesh Khandelwal What is Infraredreflefctorandhowcan we fabricatethem? Infrared radiation is the part of solar spectrum which is primarily responsible for heating. In our lab we are fabricating an “Infrared (IR) Reflector” which can reflect solar infrared radiations while remaining transparent to visible light. The intrinsic properties of cholesteric liquid crystals is used to reflect or transmit infrared radiation on demand. WhyInfrared Reflectors ?? An energy crisis is one of the most challenging problems throughout the world. There has been a huge increase in global demand of energy in last few years. Several attempts have been made to decrease the consumption of energy sources. One of the main energy consumption in building, cars, greenhouses and indoor spaces is by cooling devices to maintain the indoor temperature in a comfortable range. To reduce the consumption of tremendous amount of energy by cooling devices we need an improved control of transparent features (i.e. windows) for reduction of heat by controlling infrared transmission from outdoors to maintain a desirable indoor temperature. Therefore, a device ‘IR-Reflector’ is needed for the rejection of infrared light: this device would be very attractive, especially if working mechanism of IR Reflector does not affect light in the visible region and if it can function without using any additional source of energy itself. Project In this project we will fabricate lightand temperature responsive Infrared reflectors. These reflectors can be switched from reflective to transparent for IR radiation in response to a number of potential triggers, including temperature. Techniques used in the projects: UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FTIR, NMR, MALDI, DSC, TGA, Polarised Optical Microscope (POM) etc. Relevant References: D. J. Broer, J. Lub and G. N.
