  2. Warm-up Directions: Each sentence below contains at least one mistake in grammar. Please correct the mistake (s). You have 5 minutes. • I was four when the September 11 attacks happen I don’t remember them. • The student did said that she visited New York City. • There going to visit the memorial site after its completed.   3. Homework and Reminders • In-class essay is tomorrow. • Cover your textbooks by tomorrow and bring to class. • We will begin using the textbooks on Monday. • If you have additional materials, please see me at lunch.

  4. Objective By the end of the period, scholars will describe and identify the impact of the September 11th attacks by completing a tree map.

  5. Period 1 • You will have five minutes to read and take notes on your section. If you are an A, you will be reading “Security.” If you are a B, you will be reading “Public Reaction.”

  13. Opinion statements • Now we will practice writing opinion statements for each of the three body paragraphs.

  14. Thesis statement • A thesis statement is an opinion statement. The thesis statement will be written in your introduction. • Thesis statement examples: Example 1: The September 11th attacks had devastating impacts on the public’s vulnerability, including every individual’s sense of safety and security. Example 2: The attacks taking place on September 11 affected ________________ due to the fact that _________. A/B Partners will now write a thesis statement together. Finally, write your own thesis statement. Write it on the top of your tree map.

Last-minute writing reminders • Remember that the essay is a pre-assessment (pre-test). • You will be asked to write a 5-paragraph essay that includes: 1) Introduction (including thesis!) 2) Body paragraph A (impact on American public) 3) Body paragraph B (impact on homeland security) 4) Body paragraph C (impact on you) 5) Conclusion
