  5. Urbanization In the early 1900s the urbanization of Texas increased. Cities like Dallas, Houston, and Ft. Worth began to grow in population. This population shift from rural to urban areas would cause the population pattern to continue throughout the 20th century as more and more people moved from the farms to the cities throughout the state. 1.What do you think the word urbanization means? What evidence makes you think that? 2.Can we substitute urbanization for the phrase “growth of cities”? Why or why not?

Urbanization • Urbanization refers to the process of an area becoming a city • Prior to 1900, Texas was a state with mainly rural areas (large farms, few people) • However after 1900, Texas began to be a state of multiple cities (areas with large populations) Answer this question in your spiral: What factors helped Texas go from a rural to an urban state?
