  1. Hitler

  2. Overview • Hitler did a lot of bad stuff • Mein Kampf is very interesting. Hitler wrote a blueprint of what he was planning to do, and it was generally ignored. • Since the end of WW II Hitler has been widely studied in many contexts, leadership being one of them. We will use his story as a case study for the idea of ethics in leadership.

  3. Main Takeaways • Leaders come in all shapes and sizes • Question of ( / tension between?) morality and leadership • How could this happen? Was it a lack of leadership everywhere else? What is the role of a follower?

  4. Was Hitler a Leader • Unanimous “Yes” “Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their shared purpose.” (Daft definition of leadership).

  5. Was Hitler a leader? • Comparing someone to Hitler is a common, if unfortunate, rhetorical device. • Make an honest comparison/contrast between Hitler and the following leaders: • Sun Tzu • Martin Luther King • Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak • If we’re feeling adventurous: • George W. Bush, Barack Obama

  6. Leadership & Ethics • Almost the whole class said that Hitler was a leader • Almost the whole class said that ethics / morality are integral to leadership Please reconcile the above bullets.

  7. Moral Development and Kohlberg

  8. Leadership and Morality • What level do you think Hitler was at? • What level do you think his followers were at? • What level do you think a great leader is at? • What level were the other leaders we studied at? • What level are you at?

  9. The Role of the Follower • Be a courageous follower: challenge flawed plans and proposals • Supporting the leader’s vision and their efforts to make necessary changes • Encourage a relationship of open and honest feedback • Appreciate and recognize effective leadership • Openly support agreed-to leadership decisions • Upwardly coach and council the leader when appropriate

  10. The role of the follower • What could/should “followers” have done in Nazi Germany? • How does this relate to our conversation on ethics and leadership?

  11. Final Thought “Leadership is an influence relationship between leaders and followers who intend real changes that reflect their shared purpose.” (Daft definition of leadership). Should this definition be changed?
