  1. Digital Sound ProjectionECE 477 Group 6Patent Liability Steve Anderson Mike Goldfarb Shao-Fu Shih Josh Smith

  2. Product #1: Shure Wireless Microphone Systems • Mic/Line input to transmitter • Wireless Transmission over ~700 MHz • User selects frequency using UI • Receiver outputs to speakers

  3. Product #1: Possible Infringement • Same overall function – transmit audio wirelessly to receiver and output to speakers • Different wireless scheme • UI more involved on DSP using signal processor • No infringement  No action necessary

  4. Product #2: Technical-Pro RX-B32 • Audio Receiver • Some user input to adjust audio signal • Mic Input also with 2 channel stereo input • FM/AM radio tuner • LCD shows pretty bars

  5. Product #2: Possible Infringement • Audio Signal input to receiver • User changes effects to fit preference • Significantly different UI options than DSP • Volume adjustment available on transmitter • Meant for high quality • Accepts a wireless audio (FM/AM) • DSP designed to accept only the signal from matching transmitter • Significant differences  No action needed

  6. Patent 7,680,465 – Sound enhancement for audio devices based on user-specific audio processing parameters • Filed - July 31, 2006 • Important Claims: • A method comprising: providing a manual control to receive a user input selection of one or more user-specific audio processing parameters (using digital signal processor) • relating to a hearing preference of the user • adjusting a gain in one or more frequency bands • receiving an RF signal from a first wireless device; demodulating the received RF signal to obtain an audio signal

  7. Patent 7,680,465 – Possible Infringement • Everything described in the patent is implemented in our design • Patent info is very broad and general • Would need more detailed info in order to figure out if anything is really infringed • Software / hardware • Most of the claims could be considered “obvious” • If DSP infringed on this patent, then probably would have to pay to use
