  7. What is Financial Aid? • Financial Aid is funding provided through enrollment fee waivers, grants, scholarships, work, and loans to help assist with paying for college costs • Financial Aid is not a life style • Financial Aid is used for educational expenses only

  8. How to Apply for Financial Aid • Fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online at: www.fafsa.ed.gov • Priority Deadlines: • Between January 1st and March 2nd every year • Need prior year’s income taxes and W2’s • You only need to apply once per academic year which covers Summer, Fall & Spring Semesters • School code = 001163

How to Apply for Financial Aid • If you are filling out the FAFSA for the first time, you must visit www.pin.ed.gov and apply for a free PIN number. • Your PIN Number is your electronic signature to submit the FAFSA. • Your PIN Number is confidential; keep it safe and do not share it with others.

How do I check my FAFSA status? • FAFSA results = Student Aid Report (SAR) • Students will receive a SAR after completing the FAFSA within 24 – 48 hours if an e-mail address was provided on the application, or within 7 – 10 days by postal mail. • The SAR contains your EFC (Estimated Family Contribution) calculation. This is the number that the school will use to determine your Financial Aid eligibility. • Budget/COA (Cost of Attendance) - The estimated cost of attending school which includes fees, travel, books, etc • COA - EFC = NEED, example: 5,000 -1000 = 4,000 • NEED is the amount that Financial Aid will try to cover with funding. • When the SAR is received, students MUST read the first page of the document for important information. Examples: Selected for verification, wrong SSN, Citizenship issues, etc.

  11. How do I check my processing status? • Please do not make any corrections or changes to your SAR without consulting with your Financial Aid Advisor, as it can delay your processing. • The Financial Aid Office will make corrections or changes on your behalf, if necessary.

How do I check my processing status? • It takes approximately 7-10 business days for Chaffey to receive FAFSA results electronically. • Students can check on the Financial Aid portion of the ChaffeyView website to see when their FAFSA results have been received by the college, and if other additional information will need to be provided to the Financial Aid Office. See example:

  13. How do I check my processing status? Click on ‘MyDocuments’ to see if your FAFSA has been received or if more information is needed.

  14. Types of Financial Aid ♦ BOGW - Fee Waiver ♦Pell Grant ♦ SEOG Grant ♦ ACG Grant♦ Cal Grants ♦ Federal Work Study

BOGW - Board of Governor’s Fee Waiver • BOGW- The State of California pays per unit fees on behalf of the student • The Fee Waiver is only offered to California residents who meet certain income standards or who have calculated need • The BOGW covers $20 per unit, $17 Health Fee and half of the Parking Permit. • Students are responsible for paying the College Service Fee and any Materials Fees.

BOG Fee Waiver Eligibility: • Students who are California Residents and currently receiving cash benefits from: ▪ TANF/Cal Works▪ SSI (Supplemental Security Income)▪ General Relief or Cash Aid • Or are a certified veteran dependent by the California Department of Veteran Affairs. • You will need to bring current proof to the Financial Aid Office by bringing one of the following documentation:

Proof for the BOG fee waiver: • Copy of your current month’s subsidies check • Copy of your current Notice of Action • Statement of current Supplemental Social Security Income • Agency Certification Form (available at the Financial Aid Office) • Letter of certification from the California Department of Veteran Affairs

Refunds • The Board of Governors Fee Waiver (BOGW) must be secured by the end of the term in which you were awarded to be eligible for a refund • Students who have paid enrollment fees and who have been awarded a valid BOGW will automatically be issued a refund through the Cashier’s Office • BOGW-T’s (temporary fee waivers) are not eligible to receive a refund • No refunds will be given after the end of the semester (No Exceptions)

BOGW-T Fee Waiver • If awarded a BOGW-T: A Temporary Fee Waiver will only hold your classes; it will not cover your fees. • If a student is given a BOG-T, they have been selected for Verification. If you are selected for Verification, be prepared to provide proof of income information submitted on the FAFSA application.

  20. Verification Processing… • The Verification process requires the Financial Aid Office to request a photocopy of your signed federal taxes & copies of all W-2’s. If you are a dependent student, you will also need to provide your parent’s signed federal taxes & W-2’s to verify the information. • Please allow 6-8 weeks to complete all processing from the time you submit documentation. • Students are selected at random for verification by the US Department of Education. This is a mandatory process.

  21. Federal Grants • Pell Grant – Money given to students by the federal government for educational cost with an EFC of $4,041 or less • Maximum amount for an academic year is $4,731

  22. Federal Grants • SEOG - Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, federal funds given to students for educational cost on a first-come, first-serve basis who have the lowest EFC • Maximum amount for an academic year is $1,000 (maximum amount varies per institution)

Federal Grants • ACG – Academic Competitiveness Grant, is a new merit and need-based federal grant for undergraduate students. • Must successfully complete a rigorous secondary program of study • First year eligibility maximum $750. • Second year eligibility maximum $1300. • See the Financial Aid Office for further details

  24. State Grants • Cal Grant B - Funding given to students by the state for fees, books & supplies based on the students GPA and FAFSA data • Maximum amount for an academic year is $1,551 • Access Cal Grant Information or status at www.csac.ca.gov(WebGrants for Students)

  25. State Grants • Cal Grant C – State funding given to students in vocational or technical programs based on the students GPA and FAFSA data • Maximum amount for an academic year is $576 • Access Cal Grant Information or status at www.csac.ca.gov(WebGrants for Students)

How Do I Apply for Cal Grant B & C? • Cal Grants are grants that students apply for by: • Completing the FAFSA by March 2nd (can also apply by Sep. 2nd for Community Colleges). • Complete a GPA verification form, available online at www.csac.ca.gov. • If a Chaffey student has completed 16 or more degree applicable units with a minimum 2.0 GPA, Chaffey will automatically send GPA to compete for Cal Grant.

  27. FWS - Federal Work Study • Federal Work Study - is a federal program that helps students get jobs on and off-campus through the school’s work program. • Students receive funds in the form of a monthly paycheck • May work up to 20 hours per week • FWS is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. • Apply for FWS by indicating you are interested on your FAFSA application. • For Job listings contact 909-652-6186

  28. Chafee Grant • Grant specifically for foster youth and former foster youth to use for career and technical training. • Awarded up to 5,000 per year • To apply, contact your ILP Coordinator or download an application via the web at:www.csac.ca.gov

  29. Scholarships • Scholarships are money that students may apply for based on: Financial Need, Talent, GPA, Major, etc. (based on donor request) • For information on various scholarships please visit the Financial Aid website, Student Activities website and Chaffey College Foundation Office.

  30. Federal Loans • Federal Loans – Money loaned to students by the Federal Government for student’s education. (LOANS MUST BE REPAID)

  31. How Do I Apply for Federal Loans? • Complete the FAFSA • Attend a mandatory Loan Workshop • Loan Workshop dates are posted on our website at www.chaffey.edu/finaid • Students must be on time for the workshop and stay the entire session No Exceptions

  32. What Am I Eligible For and how do I check my award status? • Once FAFSA results are received, requested paperwork is in the Financial Aid Office and processed, students will receive a post card informing them of eligible aid that is offered. YOU MUST BE ENROLLED IN CLASSES TO RECEIVE FINANCIAL AID

  33. How to Check Your Award Status: • You may check your financial aid status and awards by logging into Chaffey’s student website at: www.chaffey.edu/chaffeyview

  34. Check your status and accept your aid… • Upon receipt of your post card you must accept or reject ALL offered awards. • To Accept your offer of aid you must log on to: www.chaffey.edu/chaffeyview See example:

  36. Disbursement of Funds • Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant, SEOG, ACG, Cal Grant, and Loans will be paid in one disbursement per term based on their current enrollment status after the last date to drop without a “W” (please check your registration statement for dates)

Disbursement of Funds • Funds will be disbursed to a Chaffey Federal Credit Union (CFCU) student bank account on the 20th of the month (following the first month once school has started) • All funds are disbursed by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) • Funds can also be transferred to your own bank account Please see a CFCU Brochure for more details.

  38. Disbursement of Funds • Funds are only disbursed to students whose financial aid packages are fully processed and are eligible. • At any time where eligibility is in question disbursements will not be issued until additional documentation is reviewed and eligibility is confirmed. • Awards are based on full-time (12 or more units) status. Disbursements will be adjusted accordingly if you are less than full-time.

  39. Disbursement for Late Start Classes • Late start classes will be paid based on the last date to drop without a “W” for that class (see registration statement for these dates). • If enrollment consists of all late start classes, aid will not be paid on the first disbursement of the semester. • Students may be paid in multiple disbursements based on drop dates addressed above.

  40. Disbursement of Less Than Half-Time Enrollment • Not all students are eligible for a disbursement at a “less than half-time” status. • If you are eligible to receive a less than half time disbursement, you will receive your portion of the funding after 60% of the term has been completed.

Disbursement of Funds IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!!!!! • Students adding classes after the last date to drop without a “W” will not be paid for those classes. • No grant or loan adjustments will be made after the last date to drop without a “W”. • Reinstatement into classes after the last date to drop without a “W” will not be eligible for a disbursement adjustment.

  42. Disbursement of FundsAdditional Information • Students attending multiple institutions can only be awarded financial aid at one school for the same term. (One exception to the rule: BOGW fee waiver is the only eligible aid for concurrent enrollment)

  44. Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (F/A SAP) • The Federal Government requires that colleges monitor academic progress of aid recipients. • F/A SAP is reviewed at least once annually, after the Spring semester.

  45. Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (F/A SAP) The standards for this policy is as follows: • Student must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative GPA • Student must successfully complete all units attempted. (receiving “W”, “F”, “I”,“NC”,“IP” are not considered completed units) • Students may not exceed the allowable \ degree applicable units within which to complete an A.A. degree, an A.S. degree, a certificate, or transfer program (60 units is standard)

Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (F/A SAP) Students who do not meet the standards will be considered: • On financial aid probation status (warning) OR • Terminated status, meaning you will be ineligible to receive federal student financial aid based on failure to demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.

  47. Withdrawals A student’s withdrawal date is: • The date the student officially notifies the Admissions Office of his or her intent to withdraw, OR • The midpoint of the semester for a student who leaves without notifying the college, OR • The student’s last date of attendance in a documented academically-related program

  48. Repayments • Students who withdraw from all classes prior to completing more than 60% of the semester will have their financial aid eligibility recalculated based on the percentage of the semester completed, and will be required to repay any unearned financial aid they received.

Current Address • Make sure your mailing address, phone number, and your e-mail address are accurate with the Admission and Records Office • Beginning 2009-2010 the majority of communication from the Financial Aid Office will be e-mail and postal mail. Post cards will be sent throughout the year informing you of disbursement dates, financial aid processing, and other information as needed
