Henry needed a male heir. Without a male heir the Tudor succession was not secure. Catherine of Aragon did not seem to be able to produce a male heir who would survive. He had also been seduced by Ann Boleyn who he believed would be able to give him a male heir . Henry needed a divorce.

Henry needed a divorce To achieve this he needed control of the Church in England Catholics don’t divorce and the Pope would not give an annulment Although his closest advisors ~ Wolsey and More were staunch Catholics there were others close to Henry who were enthusiastic for the new Protestant religion Frustrated with not being able to get what he wanted from the Catholic Church Henry rejected Wolsey and More and turned more to these new advisors.

A number of thinkers, such as Luther, believed that how the Church was structured and how it worked got in-between God and His followers Selling Pardons Having church services in Latin Having wealth for the Church In particular they did not believe in intercession
