  12. Function of Behavior • All behavior has a function: • To gain attention • To escape a situation • To provide sensory stimulation

  13. Function of Behavior • First we must determine what function the behavior serves • Then we can develop appropriate strategies for intervention

  14. Assessment of Behavior • Define behavior in observable terms • Look for reasons or causes for behavior

  15. ABC’s • Antecedent: Comes before the behavior • Behavior itself • Consequence: Comes after the behavior

  16. Assessment of Behavior • Antecedent, Behavior, Consequence • Anecdotal records • Behavioral checklists • Systematic measurement of : frequency, duration, intensity

  17. Assessment of Behavior • Interviews (student, parent, teachers, nurse, guidance counselor) • Compare the target behavior to the norm for that school, that class and that time

  18. Assessment of Behavior • When we assess behavior in a school, we must look at everything in that student’s school life.

  19. Assessment of Behavior • This includes a systematic assessment of the student’s academic program • How much inappropriate behavior do you think is the result of a poor academic fit?

  20. Assessment of Behavior • Form hypothesis about why behavior is occurring • Should behavior be changed?

  21. Behavioral Intervention • Positive skills to replace inappropriate behavior • Strategy for reinforcing new behavior • Strategy for immediate response to inappropriate behavior

  22. Behavioral Intervention • Implement the plan • Evaluate success of plan • Upon success, begin gradually diminishing intensity of strategies
