  1. Hydrogen Energy Projects for Clean and Sustainable Future UNIDO-ICHET UNITED NATIONS INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR HYDROGEN ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES Presented by : Dr. Mustafa Hatipoglu, Managing Director

  2. Mission & Background of UNIDO-ICHET The International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies ( ICHET ) is a UNIDO project which has the mission of demonstrating viable implementations of Hydrogen energy technologies and facilitating their widespread use in developing countries through realizing & supporting demonstration projects, applied research activities, education, training, seminars, conferences and workshops As a non-profit organization, ICHET aims to support developingcountries ‘leap-frog’ over conventional energytechnologies to hydrogen technology

  3. Why HydrogenandFuelCells? H2 is not a primary energy source, butan energy carrier likeelectricity Energy security concern of each country Concernover global climatechange&warming( < 2C) H2 is transportable& environmentally friendly Energystoringcapacity of H2 is muchmorethanLi-Ionbattery ( 33,306 Wh/kg vs 180 Wh/kg ) Fuel cells areelectrochemical deviceswhichproduceelectricity & heat bycombining H2 & O2,with only pure water & air as by-products FuelCellsareveryefficient energyconverters ( upto 60% ) FuelCellsmodulartechnology.

  4. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Demonstrations • Residential heating & electricity ( CHP ) • Back-up power ( UPS ) • Portable power • Distributed power generation • Cars • Buses • Scooters • Bicycles • Golf-carts • Forklifts • Utility vehicles • Space vehicles • Airplanes • Locomotives • Boats • Underwater vehicles • Portable devices ( laptop, etc.)

  5. Comparisonof FCEV with BEV Battery Electric Vehicles ( BEV ) High battery weights & sizesw.r.t. their storage capacity constrain their driving range to max. 160 miles Long recharging times ( 7-8 hours ) Batteries have 90% efficiency Fuel Cell Vehicles ( FCV ) Longer driving range 450 km with 350 barH2 and 800 km with 700 bar H2 H2 has shorter refueling time ( 3 min.) H2 has much more energy storing capacity than batteries BEV : forshortdrivingrangesandlightloads EREV : formediumdrivingrangesandmediumloads FCEV : forlong & continuousdrivingrangesandheavierloads Hydrogen FC technology and batterytechnology are complementary to each other

  6. Fuel Cell Vehicles Today :The Remaining Issues Source : GM

  7. Greener Home Energy: TOSHIBA/PEFC Co-generation ( Micro CHP ) System for Residental Application Centralized Power Production Efficiency : 35% xxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxx Distributed Micro CHP Systems reduce CO2 emission by 30 percent Distributed Power Production: Efficiency : 86%

  8. UNIDO – ICHET DEMONSTRATION and R&D PROJECTS

  9. H2 Fuel Cell UPS andFuel Cell MobilityProjects
