History • 1500 B.C.E- Aryan’s immigrated into India • 326- Alexander the Great invaded India • 322-182- Mauryan dynasty became the first historical dynasty in India. • 1526 A.D.- The Mughal dynasty takes over after the battle of Panipat. • 1526-1857- The Mughal’s rule India. • 1857 A.D.- First war of Independence. • 1858 A.D.- British take control of India after India’s failed mutiny. • 1885 A.D.- Indian Congress was founded. • 1919- The massacre at Jalianwallabag

  3. 1930- Salt Satyagraha. First Round Table Conference • 1947- India gains freedom, and Jawaharial Nehru is sworn in as the first prime minister of Independent of India. • 1947-48- thousands die in widespread communal bloodshed after partition. • 1948- Gandhi is assassinated by NathuramGodse. • 1950- India becomes a Republic and Dr. Rahendra Prasad becomes India’s first President. • 1952- India’s congress comes to power and they hold their first general elections. • 1962- India fights China and losses. • 1965- War with Pakistan, ceasefire declared. • 1971- India fights it’s third war with Pakistan. • Twenty-year treaty of friendship signed with Soviet Union.

  4. 1972- Shimla agreement signed between India and Pakistan. • 1974- India’s first atomic device exploded at Pokhran in Rajasthan. • 1975- Indira Gandhi declared state of emergency. • 1984- Indira Gandhi is assassinated and his son Rajiv Gandhi becomes the Prime Minister. • 1987- India deploys troops for peacekeeping operation in Sri Lanka’s ethnic conflict. Goa becomes the 25th state of India. • 1990- Indian Troops are withdrawn from Sri Lanka • 1992- The dome of BabriMasijid in Ayodhyawas demolished by hindu fanatics; triggering widespread Hindu-Muslim violence. • 1999-Vajpayee meets with Premier Nawaz Sharif to sign a peace declaration.

  5. Geography • It is located in the southern part of Asia. It borders the Arabian sea and the Bay of Bengal. • It is a little more than 1/3rd the size of the U.S • In the north their climate is temperate but in the south their climate is tropical. • Natural Hazards: drought, flash floods, severe thunderstorms and earthquakes.

People • Ethnic groups: Indo/Aryan 72%, Dravidian 25%, Mongoloid and other 3%. • Religions: 80.5% Hindu, 13.4% Muslim, 2.3% Christian, 1.9% sikh, 1.8% other, and 0.1 unspecified. • There are 14 different languages in India. The main one is Hindi which is spoken 41% of the population. • India has the 2nd largest population in the world. • India’s population: 1,189,172,906 • U.S.’s population 313,232,044 • Life expectancy: Males 65 years old • Females 67 years old • Avg. 66 years old • Literacy: Total population 61%

Government • They are a Federal Republic. • President: PratibhaDevisinghPatil (Since July 25, 2007) • She is India’s twelfth president but she is the first woman president. • Their capital is New Delhi. • They gained their independence from the UK on August 15 of 1947. • Their currency is Rupees. • $1 is equal to 49.07 ruppes

Current Events • October 13,2011 • India is now giving state run companies a lot of power to acquire coal, oil and other mineral overseas without consulting the government as it competes with China. • “Availability of raq material is [important] not only for the growth of the manufacturing sector, but for the economy as a whole,” Soni said yesterday. “The acquisition of raq material abroad will also help in improving energy security.” • Oil and Natural Gas Corp., India’s biggest energy explorer, and Coal India Ltd., the world’s largest producer of the fuel, are scouting the world for energy and mining assets to meet the needs of Asia’s fast growing population.

  9. TajMahal • TajMahal means “crown palace” and it often called the eighth wonder of the world. • The TajMahal was located in the city of Agra. During the time of the medieval world Agra was one of the most powerful cities. • The TajMahal was built in 1626 and 1648 under the order of Shah Jahan (emperor of Mughal) in memory of his wife, Arjumand Buna. • It took over twenty thousand workers to build seventeen years to build it. It cost over 32 million Rupees ($654,528,387.18) to build. • It is 186ft. by 186ft. and 213ft. tall. The inside and outside of the mausoleum is decorated with flowers and calligraphy using precious gems such as agate and jasper.

  10. Outsourcing • Outsourcing is the when a company hands over parts of it’s work to another company leaving them responsible to do the job under the requirements of the outsourcing company. • The idea of outsourcing dates back to 1776 when Adam Smith talked about this idea in his book The Wealth of Nations. • It all started during the industrial revolution when the U.S. started looking for a way to produce cheaper goods.

  11. Buddhism in India • Buddhism was started by Buddha Siddhartha Gautama. At the age of 29 he left his hometown of Lumbiniin search of enlightment. After going through self-denial, discipline and meditation, he attained elightenment and set out to teach people about his path to enlightenment. • Buddhism became popular in India between the years 270 B.C.E and 232 B.C.E. after King Asoka converted to Buddhism. • He did not make it the state religion but he supported all ethnical religions. There book is called the Sutra. It consists of a series of questions.
