  2. Session Aims • To gain an overview of the widening participation products developed by Skills for Health • To be aware of how these products can support workforce development and progression and contribute to improved productivity and quality healthcare delivery

Principles Widening Participation - promoting, championing and facilitating improved access to learning that results in: • Ongoing development of employability skills: • underpinning skills e.g. Literacy, Numeracy, Language • wider development e.g. interpersonal skills and team working • Maximising opportunities for healthcare staff to improve their skills, attain recognition and accreditation for learning • Progression in relation to work, learning and achievement • Increased learner confidence and motivation • Better access to employment • High quality healthcare • Improved productivity • Greater efficiency

City and Guilds Contextualised Award • An understanding of how to develop a whole organisation approach to LLN • Raises awareness of LLN issues in the workplace • Increases understanding by managers and supervisors of how to identify and support staff with LLN needs and signpost appropriately • Facilitates staff development and progression

Literacy and Numeracy Initial Assessment Tools • The tools are interactive with questions based on real life healthcare scenarios, maximising their relevance and enhancing the user’s experience. • Scenarios include listening to messages from patients, interpreting instructions, tables and charts, and calibrating equipment. • An adaptive algorithm modifies the difficulty of questions according to users’ abilities. • The assessments provide the user with a detailed profile of their results and clear feedback on answers to questions. www.skillsforhealth.org.uk/IATool
