  1. For Me To Live Is Christ Philippians 1:21 Part 1

  2. What Motivates You? • What is your motivation or drive in life? • One’s motivation will control how he handles life situations and what life choices he makes • Paul’s motivation in life was Christ (Phil. 1:21)

  3. What Motivates the World? • Recognition (Mt. 23:5-7) • Riches (Lk. 12:21) • Intelligence (Acts 17:21) • Pleasure (Lk. 15:13,30; 1 Cor. 15:32) • Status (3 Jn. 9)

  4. What Motivated Paul? • Paul wanted to “magnify” (Gr. megaluno = make great) Christ • “We live unto the Lord … we die unto the Lord” (Rom. 14:8) • “The life of Jesus may be manifested in our body” (2 Cor. 4:10)

  5. What Motivated Paul? • “We make it our aim … to be well-pleasing to him” (2 Cor. 5:9) • “For the love of Christ constrains us” (2 Cor. 5:14) • “But Christ who lives in me” (Gal. 2:20)

  6. What Motivates the Christian? • Christ must be the motivation for the Christian, not other people (Mt. 10:37) • We put on Christ through baptism (Rom. 13:14; Gal. 3:27) • We walk in Christ through faithful living (Col. 2:6-7; 2 Thess. 1:12)

  7. Paul and Death • Paul’s life as a Christian began and ended with Christ • Paul was anticipating his death at the hands of Nero (c. A.D. 61, Acts 28) • Paul faced death with confidence and optimism (2 Cor. 5:1ff; 2 Tim. 4:6-8)

  8. Righteous: To Die Is Gain • When the righteous die it is “gain” because of their reward in heaven • Will you die the death of the righteous (Num. 23:10)? • Will you fall asleep in Jesus (1 Thess. 4:14) • Will you die in the Lord (Rev. 14:13)

  9. Wicked: To Die Is Loss • When the wicked die it is loss because of their punishment in hell (Rev. 20:14-15; 21:8) • The Lord has no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezek. 18:23; 33:11) • The greatest loss in life is the loss of a soul in hell

  10. Paul's Dilemma • Paul had a strong desire to live – not for selfish purposes, but to fulfill his service of gospel preaching • Paul had a strong desire to die – not to escape problems or to give up, but to receive his eternal reward • Paul’s “gain” was Christ (Phil. 3:8)
