  3. いきます かえります ききます のみます はなします よみます おきます たべます ねます みます きます します べんきょうします Which part is the stem?

  4. Translate • (I) spoke. • (I) don’t go. • (I) will read. • (I) will not listen. • (I) didn’t drink. • (I) sleep. • (I) came. • (I) study. Affirmative negative Imperfective 1 2 Perfective 3 4

  5. Particles De: indicates where the event described by the verb takes place. Toshokandehon o yomimasu. (I) read books inthe library. Ni: (1) the goal toward which things move Toshokanniikimasu ka. Will (you) go tothe library?

  6. (Ni continued) (2) Indicates the time at which an event takes place. Nichiyoobinikyootoniikimasu. (I) will go to Kyoto onSunday. Juu-jininemasu. (I) will sleep at10:00. E: indicates the goal of movement. Interchangeable with “ni” (1). Uchiekaerimasen. (I) will not return tohome.

  7. O: indicates a “do-ee” or a direct object. Koohii o nomimasen ka. Won’t you drink coffee? Mearii san waTerebi o mimashita. Mary watched TV. Wa: indicates the topic, not necessarily the subject (do-er) of a sentence.

  8. Zasshiwayomimasu. As for magazines, (I) read. Demo shinbunwayomimasen. But as for newspaper, (I) don’t read. Kyoowakyootoniikimasu. As for today, (I) will go to Kyoto.

  9. Particles Notes There are some time words that do not take particles. kyoo, kinoo, ashita, asu mainichi, maisyuu, itsu The following words sometimes take “ni,” but not necessary. asa, hiru, yoru, ban syuumatsu

  10. Time indicator, “ni, can be used with any time words such as hours, minutes, date, month and year.

  11. Practice: Translate. What time do you get up? Where do you study? When do you watch TV? Do you play sports? Where do you go on weekends? What do you eat in the morning? What will you do this evening? About what time do you sleep every night?

  12. Find some one who… Shichi-jiniokimasu ka. Mainichi asagohan (o) tabemasu ka. Huransugo (o) hanashimasu ka. Uchi de terebi (o) mimasu ka. Nihon no ongaku (o) kikimasu ka. Tenisu (o) shimasu ka.
