  4. Where Is MesoAmerica Located? Mesoamerica is located from approximately central mexico Through Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras,Nicaragua, and Northern Costa Rica.

  5. General Climate Spanning most of Central America, the MesoAmerica Biodiversity Hotspot encompasses all of the subtropical and tropical ecosystems from Central Mexico to the Panama Canal. The hotspot harbors the highest montane forests of Central America, with the most extensive and best protected cloud forests.

  6. Ecosystem Pictures

  7. Interesting Facts about the Hotspot • The Mesoamerican forests are the third largest among the world’s hotspots. • These forests are composed of endemic species such as quetzals, howler monkeys, and 17,000 plant species. • The region is also a corridor for many Neotropical migrant bird species. • The hotspot’s montane forests are important for amphibians, many endemic species of which are in dramatic decline due to the interaction between habitat loss, fungal disease and climate change.

  8. Human Population within the the Mesoamerican Region The population of mesoamerica is very well spread due to all of the cities they have over there. So many cities out there in that region in countries such as Mexico, Belice, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panamá, etc.

  9. Plant Species In Mesoamerica, plant life is all over the place, even if some of it has been torn down for construction which endangers plants. Overall, approximately 17,000 species of vascular plants exist in Mesoamerica such as Papaya, ramon, zapote blanco, zapote negro, avocado, etc.

  10. Mammal Species The biodiversity in Mesoamerica consists of approximately 400 mammal species thriving in that area today. Examples of these species are honey bees, muscovy ducks, turkeys, dogs, etc. Some of these species remain even if some of them were eaten as food by the mesoamericans.

  11. Bird Species As of right now in the year 2018, there are 1,113 species of birds living in the Mesoamerican region. Some examples of those species are the Scarlet Macaw, Hummingbirds, pelicans, the Resplendent Quetzal, etc.

  12. Invertebrate Species and Endemic Species Invertebrate species (species with a lack of back bones) and examples of those are starfish, jellyfish, worms, etc. Endemic species, also known as species restricted to a certain area. Examples of those are scarlet macaws, hummingbirds, turkeys, rays, golden frogs, horned guan, central american squirrel monkey, etc.

  13. How is the habitat being destroyed? Each year the area loses more than 1%- or 285,000 hectares- or forest. Prior to the 18th century, the Mesoamerican region supported intensive native. Agriculture and hunting is one of the main costs of why their habitat is being destroyed.

  14. Conservation Efforts and Successes Some ways to conserve the life in the Mesoamerican region is to promote policy reforms that integrate biodiversity conservation in agriculture, infrastructure development, forest fires and tourism. Another way is to improve protection of Critically Endangered species through enhanced knowledge of their conservation needs, increased local capacity to conserve these species and investments in field conservation and protection projects.
