  2. What is Burnout ? “A state of emotional exhaustion coupled with cynicism, inefficiency, anger, and frustration. An umbrella term used to describe stress.”

  3. Why Do We Need to Know About It? Volunteers of youth oriented organizations who begin in optimism may succumb to the effects of burnout. Volunteers may experience: External Conditions - such as lack of support from supervisors + Internal Factors - such as unrealistically high idealism . At Risk for Burnout.

  5. Other Symptoms Alienation from the Job Physical Exhaustion Low Morale Withdrawal Cynicism Boredom Lack of motivation Some sufferers may experience: Gastrointestinal Upset Sexual Discomfort Bronchial Asthma Ulcers

  7. What Are Some Things That Bring It On? Daily Hassles: Everyday minor events that annoy and upset people. Can accumulate to create as much stress as major life events. Conflict: The person feels pulled between two or more opposing desires, motives, or goals A volunteer, for example, may experience conflict in trying to meet the demands of his/her family and of his/her Scouting position(s).

  8. What Are Some Things That Bring It On? Catastrophes: Uncontrollable stressors – there is nothing you can do to protect yourself and may result in high levels of anxiety, anger, emotional tension and physiological signs of stress. Uncertainty: People who are less prepared for coming events are likely to feel worse, particularly among individuals who are more anxious. In general, the more knowledge people have as they prepare to face a stress-provoking experience, the better they feel.

  9. What Are Some Things That Bring It On? Doubt: The Scouting volunteers who have doubts and uncertainties about their job(s), commitments, or who may be faced with possibilities of not being accepted or approved by their units might also experience this kind of stress. [ The great Scouting lie: “It’s only one hour a week.” ] Individual Experience: One person for instance may experience severe stress of an occurrence that may leave another person relatively calm. Stress is relative to the individual.

  10. What Are Some Things That Bring It On? Volunteers can begin to feel depleted for many reasons: Not paying enough time or attention to nourishing and nurturing yourself Own crises, life stresses, or losses have become temporarily overwhelming to you Not getting enough support or recognition for what you do Feeling helpless and out of control due to problems of those who have sought help from you or because of the lack of agency or community resources to address those needs Set expectations and standards that are too high for you Disorganized or trying to do too much too quickly Difficulty effectively managing your time Overestimated your own abilities

  11. What Do We Do About It? Education – so we can recognize it Recognition – so we can prevent it or - so we can get help Prevention – so we’ll feel better Supervision – with help, we can overcome it

  12. COMMISSIONERS Your Primary Scouting Role is Commissioner Service Don’t try to do three or four things in Scouting.

  13. COMMISSIONERS Set Your Commissioner Priorities Do the things that will make a difference in the life of the unit that will solve a problem or improve the unit program. A sense of belonging to a group can create loyalty and motivate a person to continue. People will do a good job and remain active when they feel their voice is heard and their opinions are valued. Offer constructive ideas for improving commissioner service in your district. Help make decisions and solve problems.

  14. COMMISSIONERS Keep up to date on your commissioner responsibilities Take a new training course A sincere, interested, helpful, and enthusiastic attitude will go a long way in motivating others You need to realize how important your individual talents, interest, and skills are to Scouting

  15. COMMISSIONERS Use your Commissioner Program Notebook for key notes, things, to do, names and contact information Keep Scouting papers sorted out Organize and file the stuff you can use (key manuals and guidelines) Throw out what you don’t need Don’t let mail accumulate

  16. COMMISSIONERS Schedule appointments with long-winded people just before a meeting you must attend. This will cut down on time wasted by people who tend to overstay their welcome.

  17. COMMISSIONERS Group your Commissioner tasks or appointments Going to the roundtable ? Good. Make a delivery en route. Arrange to meet with a unit leader before the roundtable. Plan to visit with others during the break.

  18. COMMISSIONERS Don’t feel guilty about saying “No” (gracefully of course)

  19. COMMISSIONERS Don’t Procrastinate Don’t let things linger Do it now. If the job is too big, break it down into manageable pieces. Make a weekly to-do list Prioritize it Do one at a time
