  3. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Annual Meeting Blacksburg, Virginia 18-20 April 2006 Purpose Cross-Cutting Themes • Create a SA & NRM “program” rather that a portfolio of five independent activities. • Promote cross-activity synergies. • Complimented Areas of Inquiry. Identified by EEP during the long-term research application review process.

  4. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Annual Meeting Blacksburg, Virginia 18-20 April 2006 SANREM Areas of Inquiry • Technology Integration: Technologies needed to promote SA &NRM (i.e., GIS, models, etc.). • Governance: Policies, regulations, and institutional arrangements enabling better NRM. • Economic Policy and Enterprise Development: SA and NRM practices that develop niche markets, and are eco-friendly and competitive (improved livelihoods). • Social and Institutional Capacity Building: Promoting improved SA & NRM leadership, NGO technology transfer, and increased civil society and government synergy.

  5. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Annual Meeting Blacksburg, Virginia 18-20 April 2006 Areas of Inquiry • Biodiversity Conservation and Environmental Services: Integrated NRM to promote synergistic relationships between production, biodiversity, and livelihoods. • Systems Linkages: Among gender, biophysical, technology, governance, economic, social, and environmental factors required for development. • Globalization, Vulnerability, and Risk: Practices to address risk and vulnerability caused by globalization, HIV/AIDS, food insecurity, etc.

  14. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Annual Meeting Blacksburg, Virginia 18-20 April 2006 Where do we go from here? • Today’s objective was to provide you with background on the proposed cross-cutting themes and initiate thinking about possibilities and potential collaboration. • Tomorrow approximately two hours are scheduled for discussion on cross-cutting themes and how to implement them. • Hope to have an identified leader for each theme and a synopsis of what you tentatively plan to implement the cross-cutting themes.
