  1. WHAT IS ENERGY?

  2. I. Energy A. the ability to do work or cause a change B. measured in joules C. energy can be transferred, the object that work is done on gains energy

  3. D. Two types of energy 1. kinetic energy- energy an object has due to its motion a. kinetic- comes from Greek word kinetos meaning “moving” b. Factors that affect kinetic energy 1) mass and velocity 2. kinetic energy= ½ x Mass x Velocity2 3. Do mass and velocity have same effect on kinetic energy? a. No- changing velocity has a greater impact than mass

  4. 2. Potential Energy a. stored energy- has the potential to do work b. Types of potential energy 1). Gravitational Potential Energy a). related to objects height b). GPE= Weight x Height c). example- skier going down a hill

  5. 2). Elastic Potential Energy a). energy related to an object that is stretched or compressed b). example- archer shooting an arrow
