  4. Born in Austria in 1889 • Moved to Vienna at the age of 18 • Joined the army during WWI • Following the war, he joined a military intelligence unit – he was told to keep an eye on members of the German Workers` Party

  5. Weimar Germany • 1919: Provisional government drafts a new constitution in Weimar, Germany • French and Belgian occupation of the Ruhr Valley • 1923: Hyperinflation • Culture flourished as the government floundered

Hitler saw the German Workers` Party as a means to reach his political ends • February 4, 1920: Hitler delivered a speech outlining his 25 points http://www.historyplace.com/worldwar2/riseofhitler/25points.htm • Hitler created a new flag for the National Socialists, featuring the swastika • July 1921: Hitler became a member of the Executive Committee of the party

The Beer Hall Putsch • November 8, 1923: Hitler held a rally at a Munich beer hall and proclaimed a revolution • November 9: He and an army of ``brown-shirts`` attempted to take over parliament • Hitler was arrested and charged with treason • Sentenced to five years in prison, of which he served 8 months • Wrote the first part of Mein Kampf while in prison
