I Germany Sparks a New War in Europe • Germany & SU sign the non-aggression pact • Promise not to attack each other and secretly agree to divide Poland between themselves • Non-aggression pact ensures Germany wont be attacked from east • Hitler unleashed Blitzkrieg on Poland  GB & France declare war 2 days later • Blitzkrieg = “lightning war” surprise simultaneous aerial and ground attack

Stalin begins to send troops to E half of Poland as germ was in W • GB & France stationed on Maginot Line • Forts along border of France & Germany • Germans along the Siegfried Line (few miles away) • Nothing happened  “sitzkrieg” or “phony war” • “phony war” ends with German invasion of Denmark

II Battle for France and Great Britain • Germ moves through Belgium & sends troops through the Ardennes to get to France • Heavily wooded area in NE France & Luxembourg • Allied forces trapped in N France fled to GB through the English channel • Sensing Frances fall, Mussolini joins forces w/ Hitler and attacks France from S • Charles De Gaulle= WWI vet in exile org. Free French mil.

  6. France falls  GB (Winston Churchill)alone against Nazis • Hitler  Operation Sea Lion (Luftwaffe to take out RAF) • RAF won Battle of Britain because of 2 major tech advances • Radar • Enigma code broken

II Eastern Front & Mediterranean • GB resistance  Hitler's attention to east (Soviet Union) • Italy attacks N Africa & moves into France to join Nazi forces • Mussolini moves to Egypt to control Suez Canal • GB pushes back  Germany sending Rommel AKA “Desert Fox” • Desert Fox creates Afrika Corps & gains control of Suez • Hitler invades Balkans in order to invade SU

  8. Hitler invades SU (Operation Barbarossa) • Russians retreat with scorched earth warfare • Hitler lays siege on Leningrad during winter  thousands of deaths but no surrender • Hitler moves to Moscow (capital) in winter & is counterattacked • Harsh winter  German failure (did not learn from Napoleon's winter defeat)

  9. IV the United States & its Allies • WWI  Isolationism  Neutrality Acts • Illegal to send or sell arms to nations at war • FDR new Allied loss would  US getting involved • Congress passes Lend-Lease • FDR & Churchill sign Atlantic Charter  basis for peace plan at the end of WWII • U-Boat sinks American ship  US in undeclared naval war with Germany
