Ark Life – Gen 6 • Animals came to Noah and entered the ark • Noah entered Ark on the day it began to rain • 40 days & nights of solid rain – Water covered highest moutains • Global vapor canopy collapses • Fountains of the deep burst upward • 5th Month - Water peaked 150 days and began to subside • 7thmonth and 17th day (2 months later) - ark rested on mountains of Ararat • 10th month – Water continues to drop. Began to see mountains tops. • 11th month–Noah opens a portal and sends forth birds • 13th month (2 months later)– Waters had dried up. God tells Noah to leave the ark

Abram & Lot – Gen 13 • Gen 13:5 – Abram & Lot traveled together from Egypt to between Bethel & Ai • Possessions too great to live together. • Needed space for flocks • Herdsmen quarrelling • Separated • Lot chose Jordan valley to the East • Gen 14 – Lot gets into caught between two warring kings and Abram rescues him

Sodom & Gomorrah (& Zoar, Zaboim, Admah) • Gen 19:1-11 – Wickedness of Sodom & Gomorrah (and the other cities in the area) • Gen 19:12-29 – Lot departs the city, but sons-in-law stay • Sodom & Gomorrah • Zaboim & Admah also destroyed • Zoarspared as a refuge • Lot’s wife turns • Why is this story included in the Abraham tale? • How does it help us understand the promise of “in you all families of the earth shall be blessed?”

  19. God Promises a Son • 17:16 – “a son BY HER” • 17:17 – Abraham’s faithLESSness • Fell on his face and laughed! • Abraham is so faithless he refers to Ishmael • God says, “NO! It shall be Isaac.” • 18:12 – Sarah laughed! • So, name him, Isaac or (He Laughs). • This concept of “Son” underscores the entire book of Genesis and cannot be overstated.

Like Father Like Son • Read Genesis 26:1-16 • God confirms his covenant to Isaac • Lies & Deceit (Abraham and Isaac) • Same Wife/Sister Lie • Same Place (Gerar) • To same King (Abimelech), perhaps son or grandson • V. 12-16 – How did God “punish” Isaac for this lie? • What does this say about the nature of God and his blessings to us?

  21. “I Am with you” • I AM is with us. • Is there anything more comforting? • God appears to Isaac • 26:24 - At Beersheba to remind him… • I am the God of your Father… • Fear Not, for I am with you… • …I will multiply your offspring… • Exodus 3:14-17 – to Moses. “I AM WHO I AM” • I am the God of your fathers, A, I, and J • I will bring you out of Egypt

Isaac’s Sons • Isaac is old, dim eyed, and preparing to die. • Given this, was both Isaac’s physical and spiritual eyesight dim? • Do you recall Abraham’s final wish for Isaac? • Find a good wife from his kinsmen • Now it is Isaac’s turn • Gen 26:34-35 – Esau took Hittite wives • Judith, daughter of Beeri & Basemath, daughter of Elon • Made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah? The Deception • 27:5-27:46 – Rebekah & Jacob’s deception • Was it successful? • Consequences Good or Bad? • Isaac: blinded by his traditions, growing dim spiritually, his will was thwarted, 27:37 • Esau: cheated out of his blessing 27:38, incited to murder 27:41-42 • Jacob: compromised himself spiritually and forced into exile 27:43 • Rebekah: loses her child to exile 27:43 Jacob Receives Isaac's Blessing Jusepede Ribera (1637)

Exile Road • Gen 28 – Bethel ladder dream was a sort of conversion for Jacob • Hebrew “ladder” could also denote a “stair way” • Significance • Confirmation God was with Jacob • Purpose of a ladder or stairway? • Look at John 1:51 • 28:16 - Jacob understood that God could be with him on earth at that place • Bethel means “House of God” Jacob's Dream, RaffaelloSanzio (Raphael) (1519)

Retraces out promises for offspring • Recalls Great Nation promise God made to Israel at Bethel/Luz in 48:4 • Recalls Land promise • 48:21-22 – How is blessing of land passed on to Joseph and his sons? • Ephraim placed ahead of Manessah • What famous Israelite leader was an Ephraimite? – 1 Chr 7:20-27 • 48:8-22 – How is the blessing passed from Israel to Joseph? • Via adoption of Ephraim and Manasseh • Why not bless Joseph?

  36. Death of Joseph • 50:22 – How old was he at his death? • 110 • Saw his Great Great Grand Kids • 50:24 – Joseph is 110 and the yougest. Yet, he is still talking to his brothers. They must be >110 years old! • 50:25 – Made the sons of Israel swear to take his bones to Canaan when they leave Egypt…fulfilled in Exodus 13:19 and buried at Shechem Josh 24:32.
