    2. Brief Summary Aeneas and the Trojans finally reach Italy, where they show up at the island of Cumae. There they meet the sibyl, who prophesizes his journey toward Rome’s founding, and shows Aeneas the entrance to the Underworld after he burys Misenus, brings the golden bough, and sacrifices cattle to Hecate. In the Underworld, he sees many familiar faces from events past, eventually reaching Anchises, where he tells him of his future lineage of Roman Leaders. From there, Anchises leads Aeneas and the Sibyl back to the human realm.

Outline Aeneas and his companions reach Latium They go to the grove of Diana and Daedalus’ golden temple, then meet the Sibyl The Sibyl fortells a gruesome road leading to the founding of Rome, as bad as the Trojan War Aeneas prays to Apollo to help him and the Trojans Aeneas asks to go to the Underworld The Sibyl tells him to grab a golden bough in the forest and bury his companion Misenus Finding Misenus’ body, they hold a funeral for him In the forest, Aeneas prays for help to reach the bough Two doves lead him to the bough and he brings it back to the Sibyl Aeneas and the Sibyl sacrifice black cattle to Hacate The Sibyl leads Aeneas into the Underworld They reach the River Styx Aeneas sees Palinurus, who cannot pass through the river due to not being buried properly Charon takes them across the River Styx Into the Field of Mourning, Aeneas sees Dido Aeneas explains again that he did not want to leave her but had to Dido leaves him and returns to her husband, Sychaeus In the realm of fallen warriors and soldiers, Aeneas sees casualties from both sides of the Trojan War He sees Deiphobus, who wants to talk but the Sibyl urges Aeneas to advance through. Aeneas and the Sibyl reach the Elysian Fields, where they see Anchises He explains to Aeneas of Rome and his future descendants; Romulus, Julius and Augustus Caesar, etc. Achises leads them out of the Underworld Anchises explains of the two gates that lead to the exit; one of thorns and one of ivory; Anchises leads the Sibyl and Aeneas out through the Ivory Gate Aeneas reaches the human world and returns to the Trojans

    4. Aeneas - Protagonist of the Aeneid. His fate is to go to Italy and found the great city of Rome. He travels to the Underworld to seek his father, who tells him of Rome’s successful future. The Sibyl – A priestess of Apollo who can tell prophecies. After having the requirements completed by Aeneas, she guides him as he travels through the Underworld.
