  2. Review • What is an inverse of a #?? The opposite sign 4 , -4 or -6, 6 • What is the notation of an inverse?? -(x) • The notation for inverse of a sum is –(a+b)

  3. Inverse of a Sum -(3x +5 – 8c) -1 (3x+5+-8c) -1(3x)+-1(5) +-1(-8c) -3x +-5 +8c

  4. Steps • Change all subtraction to addition of the inverse • If there is not a number in front of the parenthesis put an imaginary 1 there • Distribute • Collect like terms

  5. Inverse of a Sum Property For any rational numbers a and b, -(a + b) = -a + (-b) We sometimes say, “we change the sign of every term”

  6. Rewrite the expression without parenthesis: - (x + 2) -x + (-2) -x - 2

  7. Rewrite the expression without parenthesis: - (a - 7) -a + 7
