  1. EMS Model Policy Planning Management Review Implementation Checking Corrective Action

  2. Environmental Aspects/Impacts • Environmental aspect (cause) • element of organizations activities, products, or services which can interact with the environment • Environmental impact (effect) • any change to the environment whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization’s activities, products, or services

  3. Aspects and Impacts (4.3.1) • An organization evaluates and addresses its own significant aspects, including non-regulated aspects • May be positive or negative • Examples: • Aspect -- Cardboard Recycling • Impact -- Conservation of natural resources • Aspect -- Particulate filters at paint booth • Impact -- Loss of landfill space

  4. Aspects and Impacts • Consider: • Air emissions • Solid/hazardous waste • Contamination of land • Noise, vibration and odor • Water effluents • Land use, energy use, water use • Raw material and resource use • Positive environmental issues

  5. Sources of information • process flow diagram • input/output data (mass balance) • regulatory reports • utility bills • waste hauling records • purchasing receipts • records of external communication • existing data (such as from a quality program) • Gross rejected parts, customer returns • Avg. machine costs/hr • Raw material inventory – days on hand

  6. Identifying Aspects & Impacts 1)Select an activity, a product or service. 2)Identify as many environmental aspects as possible associated with the selected activity. 3)Identify as many actual and potential, positive and negative, environmental impacts associated with each identified aspect.

  7. Exercise • How does Bicque Pens interface with the environment ? • Review flow chart of the process to understand inputs and outputs • Develop table of aspects and impacts for Bicque Pens.

  8. Off-spec material Hazardous waste incineration Emissions of VOCs Spills and leaks of inks and solvents Electricity consumption Use of recycled brass Dec. landfill space Degradation of air quality Inc. ground level O3 Soil and groundwater contamination Air pollution, global warming Cons. nat. resources Aspects & Impacts

  9. Employee Involvement • Formal Identification Environmental Aspects and Impacts. • Konica Environmental Group (KEG) and DPPEA worked together to investigate activities throughout the organization. TAP THE K.E.G.

  10. Nuisance Impacts Fuel Consumption - Use of a Nonrenewable Resource Training within a Natural Environment (Plant, Wildlife, Wetlands) Training within species habitat Resource Impacts Particulate Matter from Operating Vehicles Off-road Air Emissions from equipment and vehicles Outdoor burning - PM Air Impacts Disposal of Spill Residue Disposal of Solid Waste Disposal of Hazardous Waste Waste Impacts Soil disturbance leading to Erosion and Sedimentation Accidental Spillage - Vehicle /Helicopter/Equipment fluids Gray water Soil Impacts Accidental Spillage - Vehicle/Helicopter/Equipment fluids Gray water Groundwater Impacts Soil disturbance leading to Erosion and Sedimentation Accidental Spillage - Vehicle/Helicopter/Equipment fluids Gray water Surface Water Impacts Marine Corps ISO 14001 Pilot Project Environmental Aspects Encampment Input (raw material and labor) Conservation Lead Responsibility - Fish and Wildlife Division, Compliance Division, and Planning Division

  11. Significant Environmental Aspects

  12. Ranking (4.3.1) • The organization shall establish and maintain procedures to identify its environmental aspects in order to determine those which can have a significant impact on the environment. • Rank aspects and impacts in order to assess their significance • Company-specific

  13. Ranking Exercise • Using the ranking system provided: 1. Rank your aspects and impacts.2. Assess which are significant.

  14. Marine Corps ISO 14001 Pilot Project Scoring Guide for Ranking Significance Environmental Planning Division

  15. Example Significance Matrix OSR – overall significant ranking

  16. Significance Scoring • From Environmental Concerns such as: • regulatory/legal exposure • health risk/people • resource conservation • To Business Concerns such as: • effect on the public image/community • cost savings • cost recovery period • equipment/facility

  17. Significance Scoring (cont.) • Also may consider issues such as: • scale of impact • duration of impact • zone of impact • probability of occurrence or likelihood - frequent, likely, possible, rarely, unlikely • severity of impact - catastrophic, severe, moderate, minor

  18. Summary of A&I AnalysisNovozymes • 864 aspects • 83 #1 ratings • 30 rankings • 11 significant aspects • 14 aspects used for setting objectives and targets.
