  1. Text forms

  2. Brainstorm • At the end of each line below right down the words that come to mind when you look at the word written in the circle. TEXT FORM

  3. Based on my brainstorm I think a text form is? Also, from previous grades I remember that text forms are…? • 1. • 2. • 3. • 4. • 5. • 6. • 7. • 8. • 9.

  4. A Definition • Text form: A category or type of text that has certain defining characteristics.

  5. Your Mission! • Now that we know what a text form is, you will be shown a series of images/text, you must try to determine what these images are examples of? That is if you were to create a category what would you name that category?

  6. TYPES OF TEXT FORMS • Create a chart similar to the one below in your notebook. Record your guess as you view the images and text on the following slides.

  7. Text form 1: ? • Why Is The Sky A Light Shade of Baby Blue? • As the light from our Sun shines into the atmosphere, most of the colors are able to reach the Earth’s surface uninterrupted. However, because blue light has a wavelength that is the same size as the particulates in the air, this light is scattered in every direction. This blue light bounces from particulate to particulate until it eventually reaches your eyes. For this reason, no matter what direction you look in the sky, it appears to be blue. This blue light originated with the Sun, was bounced around in the sky many times, and then eventually reached your eyes.

  8. Take a minute and record your first guess! • The previous text is an example of…? Right down your guess about what you think the first text form is.

  9. Text form 2: ? • PUPPIES FOR SALE • A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy. “Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies." "Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

  10. PUPPIES FOR SALE CONTINUED • The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?""Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle, "Here, Dolly!" he called.

  11. PUPPIES FOR SALE CONTINUED • Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur. The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. • As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this One noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up...."I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt.

  12. PUPPIES FOR SALE CONTINUED • The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said, "Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands." • The world is full of people who need someone who understands.

  13. Text form 3:? • Platypus • Many people call the platypus duckbill because this animal has a bill like a duck. The Platypus is a native of Tasmania and southern and eastern Australia. The Platypus has a flat tail and webbed feet. Its body length is 30 to 45 cm and covered with a thick, and woolly layer of fur. Its bill detects prey and stirs up mud. Platypus' eyes and head are small. It has no ears but has ability to sense sound and light. The Platypus lives in streams, rivers, and lakes. Female platypus’ usually dig burrows in the streams or river banks. The burrows are blocked with soil to protect it from intruders and flooding. On the other hand, the male platypus does not need any burrow to stay.

  15. Text form 4:?

  16. Take a minute and record your first guess! • Make your guess. Both of the previous images are examples of…? Right down your guess about what you think the first fourth text form is.

  17. Text form 5: ? • Going to Johar Market • My mother and I went shopping to PasarJohar Market last Sunday. We took a bus at 8 a.m. and got there at 10 a.m. • We went to the fruit section. We bought two kilograms of guavas and three papayas. After that, we went to the fish section to buy two kilograms of fresh fish. Then we went to the fashion shop to buy dresses for my sister. • PasarJohar was very hot at that time. I felt so thirsty, so I asked my mother to have some drink at a small food stall nearby. We went home at 11 a.m. by a taxi because we had to go to our family in Semarang.

  18. Text form 6:? • Water is Important for Life • Why is water so important to life? It all has to do with the unique properties that water exhibits. Firstly, it is the only substance on Earth that is in liquid form at the temperatures commonly found on the Surface of our planet. Secondly, it is a superb solvent, meaning that other substances regularly and easily dissolve into it. This allows water to carry nutrients to cells, and carry waste away from them. • In addition, water has the unique property of expanding as it freezes. Because water expands becoming less dense, frozen water, more commonly known as ice, floats. This is very important because it protects the water underneath, insulating it from freezing.

  19. Water is Important for Life • Imagine what would happen if water became more dense? It would sink, allowing another layer of water to freeze. Eventually all the water across the entire surface of our planet would freeze, making life impossible.

  20. Let’s Discuss • As a class let’s discuss the categories you have come up with and your reasons for deciding on the category.

  21. The Six Types of Text Forms Are; • 1. Explanation • 2. Narrative • 3. Report • 4. Procedure (Instructing) • 5. Recount • 6.Persuasive
