  1. Question 5: How did you attract your audience? By Ellie Ellis

  2. Part A: Marketing tools • The target audience for my opening title sequence is men and women from the age of 16-34. As my primary audience is focused on a younger generation advertising through newspapers articles or magazine reviews typically wouldn’t be as affective as advertising through the use of the internet and social media.

  3. Pull advertising and Push advertising • Pull and Push advertising will be my primary source of advertising. Pull advertising is interactive marketing through the use of social media, viral marketing campaigns, websites and web 2:0 word of mouth. Push advertising is advertising through traditional non-interactive marketing forms such as posters, billboards TV ads. The reason for this is that for my target audience typically find out most new information through the use of internet and TV. The main reason why pull advertising will be effective this is that it is cheap and time effective, it doesn’t cost anything for a poster or trailer to be shared over Facebook or twitter, it is time effective as something can go around the internet and be seen my thousands within minuets and with the younger generation this is what is happening. The reason why push advertising will be effective is firstly due to TV ads, millions of people watch TV everyday that’s why a TV ad will be extremely effective and get seen my thousands. The second reason why push advertising will be effective as it could create a secondary audience of an older based audience this could be due to the posters and billboards also typically more older people watch TV in the evenings this is when I would have my TV ads to play so more then just my target audience will see and know about the film. I feel like these forms of marketing tools will connect with my target audience in the most successful way and also creating a possible secondary auidnce.

  4. Attracting my audience. • There are several ways to attract my target audience to watch my film this could include casting actors who the audience know from other similar genre films, a unique selling point this could include twists, stars or the genre. I will focus on a unique selling point to draw my audience in, this is a famous and well-known actor who is typical for the thriller genre. Having a famous and well-known actor star in the film will draw a lot of audience in this is because the actor is well-known for being in award winning thriller films and as the actor is typical for the genre people will recognize what genre the film is going to be. This would also create a secondary audience for fans of the actor, it is typical that people who are fans of a particular actor go and watch the film just because they are in it. I will advertise my unique selling point through posters and internet this will focus on the actors name and what other thriller films they have been in for example ‘Starring Leonardo De-Caprio in Shutter Island’

  5. Part B: Audience feedback • Our opening title sequence was watched by our target audience and then we was given feedback from them. We did this to help us understand what attracted our target audience to the film and what they liked about it. We receive the following feedback in terms of genre, mise-en-scene and technical aspects.

  6. Genre • From the overall feedback given our target audience thought our opening title sequence was conventional for the thriller genre there was a number of different reasons as to why. Firstly the mystery element was mentioned a lot, the enigma and twists throughout the sequence is typical for the genre as it doesn’t give a lot away creating a lot of questions for the audience. Secondly suspense and fear of the unknown where used throughout this is also conventional for the thriller genre.

  7. Mise-en-scene • There was a various elements of the films mise-en-scene which the audience found effective. Firstly the location this was due to it being set in a woods and creating a unknown mystery the location was also isolated and had an eerie feel which made it conventional to the thriller genre as people were unsure what was going to happen. Another mise-en-scene element which was mentioned was the CCTV aspect of the OST they said it worked extremely well the idea that the main protagonist is always being watched. Finally from the audiences feedback I could see that the costumes chosen were effective as they were realistic normal clothes typical for a thriller character. The colour of the clothes being dark was also mentioned to be effective as it creates and more serious atmosphere and shows that the character may have dark sides.

  8. Technical Aspects • In terms of technical aspects the CCTV element was something which the audience found effective this included how the CCTV camera zoomed in and out, how the CCTV shots were in black and white and how there was CCTV text over the shots this created a more realisticfeel. The fonts were also something which my audience found effective as they were conventional to thrillers and gave a eerie feel. Finally music and sound effects were something which was effective as it build up tension and the sound effects of the CCTV camera zooming made it feel more realised and made it different and stand out in comparison to others.
