  1. Is it a solid or liquid? You decide! Changes in Matter Physical and Chemical Changes By Diane McDonough

  2. Substance 1: Corn Starch and water? Substance 2: PVA and Borax? Substance 3: Glue and Borax? Substance 4: Glue and Starch Solution?

  3. Neither a solid or liquid… So what are they? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7a84816i_g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUMX_b_m3Js

  4. NON-NEWTONIAN FLUIDS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7a84816i_g

  5. According to Time Warp, what are some examples of Non- Newtonian fluids? • Corn Starch and Water • Blood • Ketchup

  6. A non-Newtonian fluid is a substance that is dilatant, that is, under stress, the material dilates or expands.

  7. Unusual Properties of Non-Newtonian • Under low stress, such as slowly pulling on the material, it will flow and stretch. If you are careful you can form a thin film • Pull sharply (high stress) and the material breaks • Pour the material from its container then tip the container upward slightly, the gel will self siphon • Put a small amount of the material on a table and hit it with your hand, there is no splashing or splattering • Throw a small piece onto a hard surface, it will bounce slightly • Stuff the material, through a tube, die swell occurs as it emerges

  8. Can you think of other examples of Non-Newtonian fluids?

  9. Some other Non-Newtonian Fluids: • Quicksand, • wet sand on the beach, • some printer’s inks, • starch solutions, • Silly Putty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUMX_b_m3Js
