Background • The Hong Kong Government established the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Preparatory Committee 1990 • The Committee completed draft legislation then submitted it to the Executive and Legislation Councils 1991 • The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine Ordinance (cap. 419) was passed by the Legislation Council 1992

  3. Background ( Cont’d ) • The Academy of Medicine was officially inaugurated on 9 December 1993 with twelve Academy Colleges and two Faculties. Currently there are a total of fifteen Academy Colleges including the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong 1993 • Construction of the Academy Building at Wong Chuk Hang started and an occupation permit was obtained. 1998

The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong • Objectives: • The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong was incorporated in February 1993 whose main objectives are: • to promote for the public benefit the advancement of knowledge in the field of Dental surgery and its associated subjects (Dental Surgery) • to act as an authoritative body for the purpose of consultation on matters of educational or public interest concerning Dental Surgery • to promote training and research in Dental Surgery

Training Pathway for Specialists and General Dentists in Hong Kong Hong Kong Academy of Medicine The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong Specialties Community Dentistry Endodontics Family Dentistry Oral & Maxillo-facial Surgery Orthodontics Prosthodontics Paediatric Dentistry Periodontology General Dentistry

  6. Specialist Training • Currently eight specialties (Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontology, Prosthodontics, Family Dentistry and Community Dentistry ) have been recognized by the Academy of Medicine. • Conjoint Intermediate Examination (with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh) for College trainees. • Fellows exit as FCDSHK (Specialty) and FHKAM (Dental Surgery)

  8. Organization A Council with •Education Committee and Specialty Boards and a Committee of General Dentistry •CME Subcommittee •IT Committee •Membership Committee and a Secretariat

GDP Training Milestones 1998 Conjoint examination of MGDS with RCS (Edin) 2003 Establishment of the specialty in Family Dentistry 2004 Establishment of Specialty Board in Family Dentistry 2005 Establishment of Taskforce in GDP 2007 Establishment of a Preparatory Committee of GDP and later a Committee of General Dentistry April 2007 Membership in General Dentistry
