  1. The Subjunctive Mood

  2. So far you have learned the “indicative” tense. This is how we express facts. The subjunctive mood is used to express . . . • Wish • Hope • Desire • Uncertainty

  3. Example of when to use the subjunctive “I want that you eat your food.” “Yo quiero que comas tu comida.” “Comas” is subjunctive (comer), because it is uncertain if you will eat it or not. Notice how the verb comer (an “er” verb) is conjugated with an “ar” ending.

  4. Example of when to use subjunctive I want that you study. Yo quiero que estudies. Estudies is subjunctive, because I don’t know if you’ll study or not. Notice how estudiar (an “ar” verb) is conjugated with an “er” ending.

  5. How do we conjugate the subjunctive? • For an “ar” verb, you use the endings for “er/ir” verbs • For “er/ir” verbs, you use the endings for “ar” verbs

  6. Are there irregulars? • Of course!! • We’ll work on those later.

  7. Do we use the subjunctive in English? • Not usually • We use it to speak hypothetically: “If I WERE king . . .” (Usually you don’t say “I were,” you say, “I was.” “Were” is subjunctive.

  8. Common verbs used with the subjective • Querer (If I want you to do something, I’m not sure that you will). • Esperar (If I hope that something happens, I’m not sure that it will).
