  2. Who are these people? Pharisees – [means “separated one”] • Strict observers of the Law which they believed kept them from sin • Belief in afterlife • Generally middle class • Belief in the resurrection of the body • Belief in divine judgment of the living & the dead • Synagogue centered • Accepted the Torah & the Prophets as inspired

  3. Sadducees – • Wealthy ruling class denied afterlife & final judgment of the living & the dead • Originally in charge of the Ark of the Covenant • Were priests & aristocrats • Temple centered activity • Accepted only the Torah as inspired • Did not believe in the resurrection of the dead • Did not believe in the immortality of the soul, or in angels • After 70 AD, they died out. Why?

  4. Essenes • Broke w/conventional Judaism • Went into the desert to await the end • Put all their hope in God. Zealots 4. Expected a military Messiah -- more political than religious The poor – largest group Poor – largest group
