  3. Research justification • Due to the high prevalence of dengue fever in Malaysia. • To find out how far the respondents concern about this issue • To create awareness towards this issue among the respondents

  4. LITERATURE REVIEW • Definition • Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, mainly the Aedesaegyptispecies. • There are four strains or serotypes of dengue virus namely DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4.

  5. Epidemiology • Dengue viruses occur in most tropical areas of the world. • Common in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Australia, and the Americas. • In Malaysia: 1902 -> Earliest recorded case of dengue fever in Penang. 1962 -> First major dengue outbreak in Penang. 1973-> Nationwide outbreak in Kuala Lumpur

  6. Dengue Cases In Malaysia From 1998-2008 Source from Ministry of Health Malaysia **28.12.2008 – 03/01/2009 ,1157 cases with 4 fatality cases have been reported!**

  7. Conceptual framework • location gender year race knowledge attitude practice

  8. Research question & research hypothesis • Research Question - Is the level of KAP among 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students high? • Research Hypothesis - The level of KAP among 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students is high.

  9. GENERAL OBJECTIVE • To study the current level of knowledge, attitude and practice among 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students in UKM 2009 about Dengue fever

  10. Specific Objectives • To calculate the number of students by gender and race • To determine the KAP about Dengue Fever among 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students • To compare the KAP level on Dengue fever by year of study, gender and race

  11. BACKGROUND • The respondents are 1st and 2nd year UKM Biomedical Sciences students in 2009. • They are from the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences in University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Campus Kuala Lumpur.

  12. RESEARCH DESIGN • Cross-sectional studies • This study allows the assessment of the respondent’s current level of KAP towards dengue fever at one time only.

  13. Sampling method • Stratified Random Sampling • Target Population - All Biomedical Sciences students in UKM KKL. • Study population - A group of 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students in UKM KKL.

  14. Sample Frame - The list of 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students in 2009 • Sample unit - students • Sample size ~ total 1st year students = 84 students ~ total 2nd year students = 97 students

  15. This is the formula that being use to calculate the sample size n = λ2 NP (1-P) ∆2 (N-1) + λ2P (1-P) • From the formula, - sample size for 1st year students = 78 - sample size for 2nd year students = 83 - total sample size = 161 • But in this study, we employ universal sampling method • For each stratum, we employ simple random sampling method.

  16. MATERIALs/METHODs BEING USED • Questionnaire - Indirect Method - Closed Ended Question - Likert scale

  17. Research analysis • by using SPSS version 15.0, we employ these statistical tests - Independent t-test - One way ANOVA - One Way Chi square

  18. Defining variables • Dependent Variables: - Knowledge - Attitude - Practice

  19. Independent Variables: - Gender - Race – Chinese, Malays, Indians or Others - Year of study – 1st or 2nd year UKM Biomedical Sciences students of session 2008-2009

  20. INCLUSION Criteria • Inclusion Criteria • All 1st and 2nd year Biomedical Sciences students in UKM KKL

  21. Dummy table for the research
