  8. PES GOALS 2011 • Promote power industry involvement in PES • Increase & retain PES membership worldwide, and make student, GSM and GOLD member participation more meaningful • Assure that PES is in the forefront of energy topics and emerging technologies (smart grid, renewables, distributed generation, electric vehicles, storage, demand response, etc.) • Expand services to members worldwide including education, conferences, publications, standards and “PES Careers” • Improve the effectiveness of meetings & conferences • Increase the benefits to PES from standards efforts • Improve the effectiveness of technical committee organization

  9. PES SMART GRID ACTIVITIES • New Transaction Journals • Sustainable Energy • Smart Grid • Conferences • ISGT Series • Smart Grid Day at T&D • SG Tracks at most major conferences • Smart Grid Reprint Journals 2010 & 2011

  10. PES SMART GRID ACTIVITIES • Named Erich Gunther Member at Large in Charge of PES Smart Grid Activities • Technical Committees Working Hard to Update and Create Standards Required for Smart Grid Evolution • Wanda Reder leading IEEE Initiative to coordinate Smart Grid Activities across all of IEEE. • IEEE Smart Grid Portal (http://smartgrid.ieee.org/) • IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter First Issue January 13, 2011 • Conf Calls every 2 Weeks

  11. ISGT CONFERENCES • ISGT 2010, Gaithersburg, MD • ISGT 2010 Europe, Gothenburg, Sweden • ISGT USA 2011 Anaheim • ISGT Asia 2011 • ISGT Middle East 2011, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Nov/Dec • ISGT Latin America 2011 • ISGT Europe 2011, Manchester England Dec 5-7 • ISGT USA 2012, January, Washington DC area January • ISGT Europe 2012, Berlin, Germany, Oct 2012

  12. PES Scholarship Program • Partnering with power & energy stakeholders to increase the number of new engineers pursuing power & energy careers • Targeting $12 Million over 3 year period • Includes 3 year scholarships for Soph-Sr ($2k, $2k, $3k) plus industry internship • Intended to supplement, not replace, existing funding sources

  13. SUSTAINABLE ENERGY • Part of Reason for PES Name Change • Solar, Wind, Storage, et al • NPEC is part of this • Need NPEC to collaborate with other TCs • Meet with rest of PES at conferences, JTC, etc • Be more visible—rest of PES wants to know what NPEC is doing! • How can we make this happen?

  14. COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS INITIATIVE • Formerly part of IEEE HTC (Humanitarian Technology Challenge) • Open source solar and wind power solutions for remote areas inaccessible by the “grid” • In process of delivering 6 solar trailers to Haiti • Wind solution by PES and other volunteers in Seattle area. Nearing final design.

  15. TECHNICAL ACTIVITIES • Networking • 17 Technical Committees • + 6 Coordinating Committees • 350+ Standards (40 % of IEEE total) • 100+ SG Standards across all of IEEE • Working hard to get those updated

  16. IEEE Smart Grid: Standards Over 100 standards spanning smart grid spectrum Examples: IEEE C37.118: Synchronized phasor measurements IEEE 1686: IEEE Standard for Substation Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) Cyber Security Capabilities IEEE P2030: creating a guide for smart grid interoperability that sets the stage for future standards making IEEE P1815: fast-tracking adoption of DNP3 as an IEEE standard to promote interoperability, strengthen security and maintain compatibility Coordinating with NIST and other Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) 16

  17. PES AWARDS • Some awards not given due to lack of nominees • Most folks don’t take the time to consider nominating deserving individuals • Deserving individuals are not nominated for IEEE Awards either • PES Awards at http://www.ieee-pes.org/membership/awards

  18. PES FELLOWS • Nominees are way down • Number of new fellows for 2011 was lowest in recent memory • Many deserving PES members are not being nominated • Noel Schulz leading team to look at Awards and Fellows. Info session planned for GM in Detroit

  19. IEEE Fellow status is granted to a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE’s designated fields of interest in following categories: Application Engineer/Practitioner Educator Research Engineer/Scientist Technical Leader QUALIFICATIONS FOR IEEE FELLOW GRADE

  20. Nominations should emphasize how the nominee has helped change the society Needs to be documented through publicly accessible papers, reports, etc., preferably peer reviewed To promote more PES nominations, Technical Committee Coordinators should: Identify candidates and propose/help select nominators and references Helping select nominators and references may be particularly important to international candidates in countries where there are not too many Fellows PROMOTING IEEE PES FELLOW NOMINATIONS

  21. REQUIREMENTS FOR NOMINATORS AND REFERENCES • NOMINATOR: Any person, including non-members, are eligible to serve as a nominator with the following exceptions: • Members of the IEEE Board of Directors • Members of the IEEE Fellow Committee • Members of the IEEE PES Fellow Committee • Technical Committee Fellow Coordinators • REFERENCE: A Reference must be an IEEE Fellow in good standing, with the exceptions same as above • In addition, a nominator may not serve as a reference for a nomination he/she is submitting.

  22. THE IEEE FELLOW PROCESS • Responsibilities of a Nominator: • Submit the IEEE Fellow Nomination Form by March 1 • Solicitation of at least 5, but no more than 8, references • Solicitation of Endorsements (optional) • Identification of an IEEE Technical Society/Council to evaluate the nomination • Responsibilities of a Reference • Submit the Fellow Reference Form by March 1 • Responsibilities of a Technical Comm. Coordinator • Submit the Evaluation for the nominations relevant to the committee by June 1 (access to the web site will be granted by the PES Fellows Committee Chair)

  23. WHAT ELSE IS NEW AT PES? • PES Careers-Global • ESMO is back after 5 year absence • GM, T&D Expo, PSCE, JTC all continue • PES e-Newsletter Format & new e-Bulletin • Promotional Videos (Outreach Tab on website) • Plain Talk Courses • e-Learning Modules (Smart Grid Recently added) • PES Logo Lapel Pins

  24. PES NEEDS NPEC • Need NPEC to collaborate with others • Meet with PES at conferences, JTC, etc • Be more visible—rest of PES wants to know! • Let’s discuss ideas for change

  25. IT’S A GREAT TIME TO BE A PES MEMBER!

  26. IEEE PES Mission Statement To be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society and the preferred professional development source for our members
