  2. Tire Changing Safety • Disabled motorist wishes to change their own tire. • Provide protection. • WSP changes the tire. • Have them stay in their vehicle for their protection.

  3. Tire Changing Equipment • Working jack • Lug wrench • Spare tire • Legal tread • Proper inflation

  4. Changing A Tire • Vehicle is on firm and level ground. • Block the wheels. • Use jack as designed and lift at designated points. • Never go under a vehicle. • Disc brakes.

  5. Fire Extinguishers Dry Chemical 10 Pound

  6. Operation • Remove from bracket in trunk. • Invert and shake extinguisher to loosen compacted dry chemicals. • To use, remove "safety pin.” • Point nozzle at base of fire and squeeze nozzle handle.

  7. Inspection • Required monthly. • Safety pin. • Safety seal - plastic tag (yellow or orange).

  14. Safety • Remember, this equipment is extremely HOT when ignited. • Hold away from body and clothing -- they can cause serious burns.

  15. Safety • Remember to always avoid placing fusees in dry, grassy areas or in fluids. • The fluids may be flammable.

  16. Igniting/Lighting Fusees • Remove cap from the striker and the striker from the fuse end of the fusee.

  17. Igniting/Lighting Fusees With the fusee in one hand and the striker in the other, strike the fuse with the striker in a downward motion away from the body.

  18. Traffic Control • Use fusees to give other motorists adequate warning. • Can be used with traffic cones. • Never hold flares in your hand to direct traffic.

  20. Safety Precautions The inside of a disabled motorist's vehicle is the proper and safest area for him/her to wait while being assisted by a trooper.

  21. Safety Precautions • Batteries produce hydrogen and oxygen gases which may explode. • Turn off Patrol Radio. • Never stand between vehicles.

  22. Proper Use of Jumper Cables • Always put cables on "dead" battery first. • Red/Red and Black/Black • Connect last connection to ground of your vehicle. • Utilize portable jump pack for limited access to disabled.

  24. Transporting Fuel • Fuel transported in patrol vehicles shall be in approved, non-breakable containers. • Fuel shall not be carried in the trunk of any vehicle equipped with a radio transmitter.

  25. Tow Trucks WSP method of calling tow trucks: • Be sure a tow is really necessary. • Determine if owner has a preference. • This is the ONLY time you ask for a tow by name.

  26. Tow Trucks Prior to requesting a tow, be sure your request is proper. • Check for loads. • Describe type of vehicle and its size.

  27. Pushing Vehicles Procedures for pushing another vehicle: • Is it necessary? • Unsafe area, such as uneven ground, poor angle, etc.? • Off the road far enough already?

  28. Pushing Vehicles • Obtain owner's permission before pushing. (Suggested) • Permission is not required if it's on roadway or other hazardous area.

  29. Pushing Vehicles • Always match up push bars before pushing. • Fully explain to other driver what you expect them to do, IN DETAIL.

  30. Pushing Vehicles • Do not push a disabled motorist who appears to lack ability or confidence in this procedure. • Pushing a disabled motorist any considerable distance to a service station or garage is extremely dangerous and should be avoided!

  31. Care of Equipment • Everything should be returned to its storage location after use. • All items should be cleaned and dried before they are replaced.
