Objectives • Understand and apply the fundamental clay hand-building techniques: pinch, coil, and slab. • Be introduced to and learn basic throwing skills on the pottery wheel.* • Show their learning by applying their knowledge of all clay processes to create final thoughtful art products, both sculptural and functional. • Learn about the clay surface through the addition of textures and glazing techniques.

Objectives continued… • Learn about the elements and principles of design, how they are used within three-dimensional art, and be able to use the vocabulary to discuss their work and the work of others. • Learn that art production is only one quarter of the art process; students will also learn about the other three quarters: history, criticism, and aesthetics. • Explore, experiment, invent, and discover their creative side. • Learn the art of perseverance and working to exceed expectations; it’s okay to fail, or “not get it”, as long as you learn from your misunderstandings and do better next time.

Expectations • Respect his/herself and acknowledge his/her individual right to learn and earn an education. • Respect their peers and acknowledge their right to learn and earn an education. • Respect their teacher and her responsibility to educate everyone. • Respect the classroom environment, the tools, the equipment, and the materials, and use them in an appropriate manner.

Supplies • Pen or Pencil, Folder with paper or notebook/sketchbook* • Plastic Container with a Lid (butter tub, yogurt or sour cream container)* • Bags – about 5 (store, dry cleaning, large Ziploc, trash)* • Sponge or cloth rag* • Combination Lock  • Old t-shirt or apron *Will check for these items on Monday/Tuesday DONATIONS: • Kleenex boxes • Bottles of lotion   • Newspapers   • Stuff that “creates texture”: stamps, forks, bits of chain & rope, mesh, leaves, wallpaper, anything!

DISCIPLINE: Neglect of Expectations • Throwing any materials or objects = no materials • Disrespect of materials = no materials • Damaging property or projects = extra assignments • Doing homework for other classes = homework is taken away and shredded * Refer to handbook for other school policies, such as for cell phones and electronic devices.

TUSD Cell Phone Policy • JICJ – Student Use of Cell Phones and Other Electronic Devices 7-24-12 • Tucson, Arizona • GOVERNING BOARD POLICY • POLICY TITLE: Student Use of Cell Phones • and Other Electronic Devices • POLICY CODE: JICJ • For purposes of this policy, “electronic devices” include, but are not limited to, cell • phones, Mp3 players, iPods, personal digital assistants (PDA’s), e-book readers, • compact disc players, portable game consoles, cameras, digital scanners, lap top • computers, tablet computers and other electronic or battery powered instruments which • transmit voice, text, or data from one person to another. • Students may possess and use cellular telephones and/or other electronic signaling • devices subject to limitations of this and other policies of the District under the following • conditions and guidelines: • • Cell phones and/or electronic devices are to be kept out of view in a student’s • locker, pocket, or a carrying bag. • • Such devices shall not be turned on or used during instructional time, except as • authorized by the teacher. • • The principal shall establish additional guidelines appropriate to campus needs. • • Students violating the policy may have the electronic device confiscated and be • subject to disciplinary action. Any search of the contents of an electronic device • shall be by an administrator in accordance with the Guidelines for Students • Rights and Responsibilities. • Reasonable efforts will be taken to secure property that has been confiscated; however, • neither the School District nor the School District Staff is responsible for loss, damage, • or theft of any electronic device including but not limited to cell phones, laptops, tablet • computers, portable media player brought to school, even if loss, damage or theft • results from the device being confiscated. • Adopted: June 21, 2005 • Revised: July 24, 2012 • Review: • LEGAL REF.: • CROSS REF: Policy # JB Equal Education Opportunities – Anti-Harassment

  10. Procedures • Before & at the Beginning of Each Class: check board for instructions, prepare materials, start work (tardy) • During Each Class: WORK! Problem solve, Enjoy the media • Last 5-10 minutes of Each Class: START cleaning up: clean tools, wipe down tables, put away materials, check floor, complete assigned clean up job • End of Each Class: listen for announcements, remain seated until the bell rings (teacher pet peeve!)
