  3. Our First Task: Partner Introduction Task 1: Formal Partner Introduction • Your first responsibility is researching your partner. • Overall goal: Improving on your first presentation.

  4. Task 1 Background • Your partner is a “guest speaker” whom you will introduce to the class. • By talking to your partner, find out what he/she could possibly give a “guest lecture” about. i.e., living abroad. some form of hobby something related to education something related to sports. Etc. Find out something your partner knows about.

  5. Task 1 Background • Of course, your partner is not really going to give a guest lecture (we don’t have time). • The focus of this task is YOUR introductionof your partner.

  6. Our First Task: Partner Introduction Information: You will give a 2 – 3 minute formal introduction of your partner using information that you have collected from: - Your partner. Note: power point is not necessary.

  7. Our First Task: Partner Introduction Information: Points of focus: -Basic presentation skills. - Organization. -Some elements of formal presentation language. -Basic presentation elements: (attention-grabbing intro, transitions between sections, formal opening and closing).

  8. Our First Task: Partner Introduction Information: Evaluation: You will be evaluated on criteria very similar to the self-evaluation sheet. Content (5 pts.) Organization: (10 pts.) Speaking/presentation skills (10 pts.) Time use: ( 5 pts.) - More detailed information available on the website.

First Task: Partner Introduction In summary: • Talk to your partner. • Decide a topic your partner could give a “guest lecture” about. • Gather information about your partner relevant to the topic: i.e., If the topic = skydiving: • Skydiving education. • Skydiving experience. • Some personal information related to skydiving. - Prepare an outline for your presentation. - PRACTICE!!

  11. Video 1 - Problems • Speaker told the audience the presentation will be boring. • Self-introduction was too long. • Monotone voice. • Poor eye contact. • Exact topic is vague. • Turns his back on the audience. • Confusing gesture to screen. • Crowded ppt. slides.

  12. Video 2 - Comments • Attention-grabbing introduction. • Simple slides. • Excellent audience contact. • Use of hand gestures and body language. • Enthusiastic about the topic. • Topic is clear. • Clearly describes/explains the topic

  13. Overall: What are 5 important elements of an effective presentation? • - attn grabbing intro • - communicate with the aud. • Confidence • CLARITY • - Simplicity • - Practice/ PREPERATION • Body language/appearance • ORGANIZATION

  14. General parts of an introduction • 1. Opening/introduction: “The setup” • Start by trying to “grab” the audience’s attention. • Keep it simple! Possibilities: • Start with a question. • Start with a quotation. • Start with a short anecdote/story. • Start with an interesting fact.

Attention-grabbing Opening • “Is volunteering abroad something for you?” • “Abraham Lincoln once said ‘Whatever you are, be a good one.’” • “Three years ago, a regular high school student in Daegu decided to do something different and started taking pilot lessons…” • “More people are scared of public speaking than are scared of death.”

  17. General parts of an introduction • 1. Opening/introduction: “The setup” • After the opening statement, provide the guest-speaker’s name and background. • - Provide some details about the speaker. • i.e., education, work experience, current interests, current position, any details relevant to the speech/lecture.

  18. Simple examples • “Today I’m happy to introduce you to Ivan, who recently came to the university from the Czech Republic. • “Good morning. I’d like to introduce you to Su, who is a nurse form Bangkok.” • “Hi everyone. It’s my pleasure to introduce you to someone who never expected to be studying art at this university. His name is Tony. • “I’m pleased to introduce you to a woman who’s interested in stones and bones. She's’ studying physical anthropology here at the university. Her name is Maddy.”

  19. “James Hilton is an Walter T. Jones Professor and the dean of the psychology department at the University of Michigan. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology at Yale in 1981 and his Ph.D from the social psychology program at Princeton University in 1985. Among the courses he teaches are Introductory Psychology, Social Psychology, and Experimental Methods. These courses range in size from 25 – 1,200 students. He has won the Joe Winford Teaching award three times and is also the receipient of the 2012 Excellence in Research award. His research focuses on…”

  20. General parts of an introduction • 2. The Pitch: • Should be short and simple. • Tell the audience what the speaker will be talking about.

  26. Organization • Essential for any kind of presentation. WHY? • Just as important as language skills. • A well organized presentation will: • Allow the audience to more readily follow and understand the presentation. • More easily draw the audience in. • Give credibility to the speaker.
