  2. What is an Apprenticeship? Defined as: A proven program that ensures a quality education by combining on-the-job training provided by an employer plus related classroom instruction to prepare the student for a high-demand career.

  3. The Key: Apprentices “Earn & Learn” Apprentices Earn a salary at their job working with an experienced mentor while enrolled in an apprenticeship program at Harper College to Learn a specific career.

  4. Why are apprenticeships coming back? • Federal push with focus on creating jobs • Bipartisan support from Department of Education, Department of Labor, Department of Commerce, The Whitehouse, and Business and Industry. • Companies said inability to find skilled employees limits their ability to grow

Benefits for the Apprentice • Guaranteed employment – Hired by company with salary and all benefits such as vacation & sick days (a job) • College course schedule coordinated with work schedule • Zero Debt at Graduation – Employer pays for college as long as apprentice passes the courses • Graduates with AAS Degree plus 2 – 3 years experience

Benefits for Employers • Fill specific company skills gap • “Grow your own” talent with mentor-let OJT • Increase employee loyalty and reduce turnover • Diversify the workforce and reduce recruiting costs • Ensure “seasoned” experts pass on knowledge • Help put entry-level employees on a career path

  15. Big Fish • Advantages of being the Sponsor vs. Advantages of Company being the Sponsor • Designing and developing a whole new RA program • Who is responsible for recruiting the apprentices? • How many can be accommodated? • Biting off more than you can chew – employers / colleges

  16. Things to say to companies • 22% of all employees will retire in the next 10 years • Smart companies are looking at their long term sustainability plans rather than the next quarter production / profits • Be a company employees will not abandon for $0.10 cents more per hour.

  17. Things to say to companies • Evolve your recruiting strategy to include partners • Engage with local schools and community colleges to define clear competencies and role-based skills requirements • Invest in internal training and development

  18. Where do you find apprentices to hire? • Incumbent workers • High schools • Advertise • Are there ways they can hire college students?

  19. High School internship leads to apprenticeship • Offering an internship to High School students becomes a natural pipeline to find your apprentice • Gives students some exposure to the industry and your company to see if they like both • Opportunity for “extended interview” to work with a range of students to choose apprentices. • Internship opportunities can be paid or unpaid and for any length of time.
