Scandinavian Kitchen Design by Papilio Bespoke Kitchens

A modern Scandinavian kitchen embraces hygge styling. Hygge comprises all that is comforting and cosy with personal touches such as textiles, artwork or unique ceramics. Some of the key features of a Scandinavian kitchen are light colours. From pale tones on worksurfaces and kitchen cabinetry to stripped-back natural wood and natural stone, the pale tones in the background create a sense of lightness and space with a hint of welcome.

  1. Scandinavian Kitchen Design by Papilio Bespoke Kitchens Scandinavian kitchens are known for their clean lines, simple aesthetic, and focus on functionality. But they are not about pure minimalism because they embrace softness, warmth and personality. Scandinavian-style kitchens are synonymous with natural materials, comfort and touches of character. Creating a Scandinavian kitchen is a great way to add a touch of style and functionality to your home, and as bespoke kitchen designers, we can create a space you will love to cook and entertain in. The Scandinavian style was made famous between the 1950s and 1970s, known internationally as mid- century design, and we love the iconic, simple, yet highly crafted look. A vital aspect of the style is natural wood. From beech to oak, a great way to incorporate it is on floors and cabinet doors. A brand- new or reclaimed wooden floor could be the backdrop of the design, but if that's not possible and a more modern alternative is needed, our designers can incorporate wood elsewhere.

  2. In a Scandinavian kitchen, cabinetry is often unadorned with no ornamentation—the aesthetic aims to achieve a clean and uncluttered look. Cabinets, whether fixed or free-standing, tend to appear understated, but when handmade, like ours, they will be made from high-quality materials and focus on craftsmanship. Another consideration in a Scandinavian kitchen is functionality. The kitchens should be designed to be efficient and functional. We can create storage space and key features such as kitchen islands and pantries, making it ideal for additional work or entertainment space. At Papilio, we work closely with our clients to design and build their perfect kitchens. That's why we like to encourage home comforts and personal flair. In addition, our clients often own unique vintage and classic design pieces, such as tables and chairs, artwork and accessories, so we like to design spaces to feature these personal touches. In our most recent project in Somerset, we designed and built a beautiful Mid-Century-Inspired Kitchen. The bight space comprised a large kitchen area with two islands, a living zone and a dining area. We incorporated low cabinets along the perimeter wall with golden tones of American Black Walnut, topped with cool Carrara marble. Neutral tones, natural wood, highlighting copper, and powder-coated floor-to-ceiling glazed sliding doors worked harmoniously to create the Scandi-style handmade kitchen. For our Scandinavian Kitchen project in Bristol, we featured beautiful, stripped timbers and vibrant mustard yellow colour for contrast and a hint of sunny joy. We wanted the kitchen to pop effortlessly with a contemporary feel and natural light. We chose stainless steel work surfaces to provide a functional, robust, hygienic preparation surface which beautifully highlights the modern kitchen. Adding oversized filament lamps hung randomly on black braided cords created the feature statement that Scandinavian kitchen designs welcome. Another example of a Papilio Scandinavian kitchen can be found in London. The Fulham Kitchen features clean lines with hand-laid oak veneers to contrast the centre cabinets, painted in Rebecca's Red by Francesca's Paints and a muted Grey Blue on the taller cabinets. The Scandinavian kitchen showcases exceptional cabinetry-making skills with beautiful hand-cut joints, perfectly formed finger pulls and precision detailing. The kitchen space has abundant natural light with an airy yet homely finish, making the handmade kitchen ideal for cooking, eating, entertaining and all the things a busy family kitchen needs.
